| Having some issues with the first barrel and just looking for advice.
In short, I've got a mare who generally really hunts all 3 barrels. She will run in basically anything but I prefer her in a Jim Warner Hack as she really doesn't like you in her mouth. She is really responsive to your feet and seat. Anyway, around August or so she got to where she wasn't hunting the first and if she didn't go by at least a stride she'd sit and roll out wide. We realized the saddle was putting pressure on the wither and she was sore in her SI. Had that injected (hocks and stifles done in June) in September and gave her a few months off. I've made two runs now since with a different saddle and same results, just now it seems like she isn't looking for the turn at all and doesn't even attempt to sit and turn. At home and when I go to ride at nearby arenas she will suck the first up but at a show it's a different story. So I don't know if it's in her head (and mine too, cause I now expect to go by it so I've adjusted how I ride her) or if something is still bothering her. I have a vet appt next week for X-rays and a more in depth look at things. I'm lost. I didn't know if anyone had experienced something similar or had any advice as to what to look into? Im open to ideas as I am at a loss. Thanks yall |

| My two cents, get a scope done. My guy went from not even slowing down for for first to sucking it up. This was after looking at all other health issues first. |

| Wish you the best of luck. We have been in the same position, spend tons of money trying to figure it out. Then switched to the left, same issue. Never figured it out so we sold her as a trail horse. Hopefully you have better luck. |

Location: Texas | I would go back to the vet. When you injected hocks and stifles in June did you do any radiographs or just injected? Also, with first barrel problems I would pay good attention to the front feet as well. Check your shoeing angles for sure. I would basically start over with a completely new lameness exam from the ground up.
Also, so the active ingredients in your hock and stifle injections are long gone by about 77-90 days. The HA is gone a lot quicker. You always hope to get the absolute most time out of an injection as you can.. Lots of people can get by with yearly or every 6-8 months... but sometimes if the hocks are fusing or there's some form of other problem as soon as the steroids wear off the pain comes back. And injections "not lasting" can be a sign that either the problem is elsewhere (see below).
Also, if your vet has localized the pain to around the hock but hock injections don't improve things (or don't last) you need to take suspensories into account. Proximal hind suspensory issues can mimic hock pain and they can even block each other out due to the close proximity of the TMT joint and the proximal suspensory ligament. |

Location: Arizona | Is she doing this on all the barrels now or just the first? Take a video of a current run and compare it to an old run. What are YOU doing? Are you sitting and asking her to make her turn or are you just expecting her to turn? She may not be getting in her turns because you aren't asking her too...she could just be getting lazy. Have your times increased much?? Just some thoughts.... |
