They said in the press conference yesterday that he had on the required vest. But the bull stepped on his chest when he bucked off and injured his heart. He was pronounced dead at the ER.

I’m actually amazed that this doesn’t happen more often, when you consider that an average bull weighs about a ton, and you have most of that concentrated on a few square inches, all coming down forcefully on a heart and aorta that are only protected by some comparatively weak bones. Those vests won’t help against a direct blow like that. His heart and aorta was crushed between a sledge hammer and his spine. One or both were ruptured. It’s just a sad reality of the risks of the sport. Even those helmets are no guarantee against a direct hit.
