we had one hell of a cold snap this past week, I brought her into the barn everynight along with everyone else.

my mare is older, but shes had no issues with her previous foals and my vet said this spring everything was looking healthy and she caught on our first try.

anyhow she aborted yesterday

shes up to date on all of her vaccinations, I feed beautiful hay!

this would of been her 5th foal, shes had 4 colts and this is her first filly, a black filly, ugh.

Ive been talking with my vet and I'm taking her in to get it all looked after.

Many many reason but honestly sometimes it just happens. Mares are only supposed to have a 75% live foal rate.

If you breed long enough eventually it will just happen - even if you do everything right it can still happen. Sometimes itโ€™s natures way if something wasnโ€™t quite right with the foal - can also be because of uterine infections or bacteria - can also be because of a rhino virus ... hard to say but donโ€™t be hard on yourself.

I know you said UTD on vaccs but did you do pneumabort af 5, 7, and 9 months?

Honestly most of the time you never get an answer even if you submit the foal and placenta for necropsy. Herpes and lepto are a possibility, placentitis, sometimes the cord gets twisted too many times but thatโ€™s hard to prove.

She could have also had a red bag delivery that was missed overnight especially if she wasnโ€™t due quite yet.

How many days in foal was she?

I am so sorry you lost the baby.
Unfortunately this will happen sometimes when you are in the breeding game.
Our mare lost a beautiful colt (her 2nd) last year during the birth because he wasn't positioned correctly.
I keep racked my brain to figure if I did anything wrong, but after talking to the vet a couple of times I just have to accept that we did everything right and the delivery still went wrong.
Mother nature can be very cruel sometimes, but on the other hand, the baby might have had something wrong with it. Unless you have a necropsy done you will never know.

How old is older? It seems like when a mare has had quite a few foals and gets in her 20โ€™s, thatโ€™s when aborting seems to happen. Or thatโ€™s what I witnessed in the 40 years I watched my parents raise them.

Sorry for your loss, losing one that way is so hard. What is the GBED results on both mare & stallion? If both are carriers that could be why she aborted. I know that's what happened a few years back with one of my mares, before stallion testing was required. Both where then tested after my mare aborted & sure enough, both the stallion & my mare carried GBED
