I've slacked on brushing tails this winter..I'll admit it
so now I'm having to sort out a mess of a tail on one of my boys. It's thick, has twisted parts and some dried poo in there. (this particular horse shouldv'e been named pig pen )
Anyway, what do you all recommend as far as detanglers...hoomemade concoctions or store bought.

WD40

Let it sit a bit (30 minutes or so) and then start untangling by hand and with a comb. After it's all straight wash and condition - but I've left them as is when it isn't a show horse and all was fine. Only the worst matted tail won't respond wonderfully. And a matt will respond but you'll use a whole can of WD40 and it might take multiple applications to get down to the bone.

I have always loved Cowboy Magic's detangler. WD-40 does work too!Β

Mane N Tail makes an awesome detangler now!

Personally, I don't brush tails unless I go to a bigger show. It's a habit I picked up from showing horses--appies no less!

I wash first, really scrubba dub dub the tar out of it with cheap clarifying shampoo, more than one wash if it needs it. Then I smother it in Mane N Tail conditioner and let it sit for a few minutes while I wash legs or the whole horse, whatever I have to do...then lightly rinse. Let dry, spray in the detangler and then start at the bottom and gently comb through with a large tooth pick comb and my fingers, working my way up the tail.

Cowboy Magic. Kind of let it soak in. Really doesn’t take a lot. Start at the bottom of the tail and work your way up. I find a stiff brush works better than soft bristles. Not. Fast procedure but protects the hair.

EquiFuse - no silicone in it. Saved my butt when Gunner was in a tail boot and I didn't take it out and redo for about 4 weeks plus. His tail hairs were a twisted nasty knot around his tail bone. I figued he'd lose half his hair by the time I got it all untangled but it was fairly easy as I worked it out in sections.

I REALLY like the Cowboy magic oil.. Or any other spray detangler is good, ut the trick is to spray it on and let it dry completly before you start trying to brush it out.   You NEED to get a tail boot and keep your horses tails up once you get them cleaned and brushed out.  Its been a game changer for me this winter.   You can use code 10offamandaharadon to save 10%

My mare has 4 big rats nests in her mane.......  I feel your pain. Baby oil or cowboy magic and a lot of deep breaths... and maybe a 6 pack of your choice.....

Wash and condition with cheap dollar store shampoo. Let conditioner sit for a few mins then you can pick it out. If it’s too cold to wash I use some spray form Dollar Tree. Idk what all is in it but it says it’s an olive oil conditioning spray.
