Thoughts on ulcers......

Do they affect performance?

After treating of the ulcers what is the best maintenance to keep them from reoccurring?

Race day prep for a horse that has ulcers that have been treated and healed?

Info about said horse....7 year old gelding that is not trusting except of me, nervous all time about something, very concerned all the time that he is doing something wrong ('cowboys' had him before I got him and more or less ruined him in many ways)  turned out in 20 acre pasture 24/7 except when he is at the ranch or we go somewhere, on excellent quality round bale in winter months, good grass during that season, he gets fed total equine now used to eat purina performance (stopped it cause his stool stayed consistantly loose) I could tell he probably had uclers so I switched every thing to TE, is a ranch horse (that finally gets treated how any horse should be treated gets reprimanded if needed but not beat, jerked, jobbed on for no reason like when he was younger.)  and not just trail riding behind cows he gets all sizes and shapes roped off him, sort in the pens (real ranch work), still green in the barrel pen (less than 20 runs and clocking 1 sec off pro horses), never quit, never refused, never said NO to anything. Confirmed (after  expensive vet trip) yesterday he has stomach and hind gut ulcers that are severe. Haven't ever had to deal with ulcer horses before! Thanks for the info in advance!

I've found my ulcer prone horse to be nervous when she goes somewhere, she's picky about her feed, and she's hard to keep. She does well on Purina Outlast as a preventive.

After treatment you could possibly see a change for the better from him. Not hurting. I use Gastrin plus from THE. Wyoming Barrel Racer is our BHW contact for this.

She is prompt answers questions in a timely manner.

Best way to prevent ulcers is free choice quality hay, even if you need to use a slow feed hay net to make it last longer. They are grazers by nature...they poop or eat ALL THE TIME So it sounds like you are doing everything right there.

High levels of processed feed sure won't help the issue either. Causes issues in the hind gut. I hate seeing a horse fed grain if they don't need it.

Try and eliminate any stress. Sometimes it can't be done, sometimes just adding a buddy next to them can help. I have calming cookies that I can send you - they are samples and just make them feel like they are in their happy place. Hopefully with time he will come around and settle down.

THE has Gastroplus that can work on gastric and hind gut ulcers and GI Ulcer Support that they came out with last year for a prevent. I have a horse that frets and stresses so he's on it all summer. He actually can get colicy from his stress and ulcers and last year was the best year for him. It can be fed daily or give before a show (week or at least a few days) and during the show and a week or so after to keep the belly feeling good.

Gastroplus is great because it doesn't stop the acid, but helps the lining produce the mucous that it is naturally supposed to to line it from the acid.

If he has hindgut ulcers, you might want to consult your vet concerning feeding hay.  Everything I have read on hindgut ulcers says do not feed hay.  There is a product called Zesterra that I use.  It treats both fore and hindgut ulcers.  It balances the PH,coats the stomach, stimulates eating and drinking.  You need a low starch/low sugar feed . Bluebonnet has several good choices.  Just make sure you check date code.  I’ve learned from experience.  Alfalfa Hay is good for ulcer horses and if your vet ok’s it free choice Coastal and lots of turn out time.
