Location: SoCal | Curious what everyones favorite square snaffle is, I'm open to O-Rings and D-Rings, but would like something with some weight to it. I'd looked into getting one of the Cervi square snaffles but the price isn't what I'm looking to spend. Has anyone tried the Dutton offset D-ring? |

To be honest $50 is a stretch for me on any snaffle lol but I also hear all the rave reviews of the Cervi square. I can justify $50 for a well made snaffle that gives me feel and isn't a flimsy piece of metal like the cheap snaffles out there, but $80 will be pushing it. I just don't have the budget for a tack room full of $80 to $100+ bits unfortunately. I try to buy the best I can get with the budget I have.
I will admit my favoring factor to the Dutton is the copper inlay under the bottom of the mouth for the tongue. As far as I know the Cervi doesn't have that. |

I wonder if you can find a place on Facebook that sells used tack maybe you can ask to see if anybody has a used one for sale. |

| I"m basically hording up money in my paypal of other bits and things I sell on fb etc to be able to afford a Flaharty slow twist and a square mouth piece snaffle because I've drooled over them ever since I rode with a friends.
Good bits are now one of the quality items in life that I refuse to skimp on like good toilet paper. I hate John Wayne toilet paper. Ya know rough and tough and don't take **** off nobody. I kinda feel like those dinky reinsman o-rings you find at the feed store are the same concept but your horse's mouth not your ass.
Used to I wouldn't spend the money on good toilet paper then I had a very embarrassing OBGYN visit.
Used to I wouldn't spend the money on good bits then I felt the difference.
Perspectives change. |

Location: Texas | O-rings are not my favorite bit BUT..I have a Cervi o-ring (not square, but..) and I love the weight of this bit. It feels so good in my hands. I fell like a horse can really feel the release of pressure with this bit. |

Location: Central Texas | I recently bought a Tom Balding O Ring. I'd held off for years due to the cost. WOW! What a perfect bit.
Dennis Moreland, DMTack, makes really nice snaffles that are more affordable. I have one and the horses and I like it quite a lot.

I had the Cervi square and replaced it with a Flaharty square - love it!!
OP - keep you eyes peeled on the fb Bit Auction page for a Cervi. It's a decent starter pc. It's not an O ring, though - more of a D ring.
Now, the Flaharty's and Elliott's are selling for more than what I've paid for them new.... |

A square mouthpiece gives more "bite" persay; it really backs off a horse that is wanting to lean on your bit. |

Location: Arkansas | I have a Cervi and a Dutton square mouth. The Dutton is a little bigger mouthpiece than the Cervi. Both are nice bits. You can sometimes find them used for a little less. Dutton bits are good quality though. |

| Dumb question... a twisted square mouthpiece would "bite" more than a regular round twist, right?? I'm wanting to add another to my repitoire - currently have a Balding Iron Worker (large) and a square mouth Flaharty but looking for more "You do what I say and do it now!" feel, and leaning towards Flaharty's square twist. Possbily in a 3 piece?? |

I LOVE his bits. I've got several snaffles with different mouth pieces and a "L.D." that is a must have. They are so well balanced and well made. Well worth the money!!!!

| I have a Dutton square d snaffle on order. Not sure how long it takes to get made and shipped but it was $50 free shipping from the place I ordered. I love Dutton bits but have never tried a square. I felt like it might be not as rough on the bars as the twisted snaffle can be. I’m light handed but my horses are sensitive. |

I look at bits as investments. Could be why I have many and most I won't sell. I have had to find many different kinds of bits bc this horse didn't like that mouth piece or that bit was just oo much for this horse. Yes, bits can get expense but a good quality one you can have for a lifetime. Just throwing out my perspective on bit buying. |
