Learn something new every day. BUT - I've always wondered why I'd never heard of blood type incompatabilities with horses and foaling.

Another point to review each year before foaling.

Mare forms antibodies against the foals blood type. Kind of like RH factor in people. It is in the colostrum, breaks down foals red blood cells and it becomes anemic. My foal was born on Friday everything, everything was normal, as she nursed she became weaker and weaker, so of course she quit nursing strongly and having difficulty. We helped her and helped her, thought it was a nursing issue, would not take a bottle, went to vet Sat am, as we got there she had blood in her urine. Ran tests and diagnosed, said they usually have about 3 a year. I have never had a foal with this or ever heard of it.  Put feeding tube in baby, milked mare every 2 hours( even through night) put a muzzle on baby. After colostrum is gone, antibodies are gone. Pulled tube this am after foal nursed very good. Keeping fingers crossed. Mare can be bred again but would need to know blood type of stallion. Just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem

I had a mare that had an NI foal in 2014. She had about 5 foals before that did not have NI and about 3 since then also without NI. Our vet just recomnded not breeding back to that particular stud as it was the only one with NI and the only time bred to that stud.

You can transfuse the baby with mare's blood as well, since it's her antibodies in the colostrum that are wreaking havoc.

I have not personally had a horse that I own with it, but I've seen it.

Thanks for the replies, I was worried about what to do about breeding her next year, wonder if people will think I am crazy to ask them to blood type their stallion
