I’ve never had any issues with ticks until this year. I actually had to pull one off my mare’s vulva tonight  and she had a couple on her neck and same for my gelding. Anyone have advice on what works best to prevent them?

When you check for ticks they love to embed themselves in their tails, especially at the very tip and in that very smooth and velvety area high on the inside of their hind legs.

Advice for getting rid of them, I have no idea but I'll bet someone out there does.  We have so few in this sandy soil that it's a rare problem. Luckily.....

Free range chickens... I dont have a tick on my place, those ladies eat anything and everything ... including small snakes and if it's a larger snake they will gang up and surround it and take turns pecking at it. I watched one of my hens run all the way thru the pasture chasing a grasshopper ... she was relentless until she got it cornered against the barn and gobbled it right up.

Permectrin II

It's pour on, works for months and will kill whats already attached. Works best if you do it after a workout. Pour down back, tail head and mane. I always put some on a rag and wipe their ears down.

Edit:

I would spray your property with Tempo. Safe for animals when dry and will kill the ticks, fleas, spiders, etc...

As much as I would love chickens I have two German shepherds who would love to have them for a snack.. :(

I had a problem with ticks about a month ago, never saw them before! I used EquiSpot to treat and wormed them as that will kill any attached ticks. So far so good on the being gone! I did have to use the EquiSpot on one horse two dosages.

Second the EquiSpot.  It has worked well for me in the past several years.

I understand.  My labs have had their fair share of stupid chickens that have wandered into their dog pen, regardless of us putting up cattle panels and lining them in chicken wire.

A good worming program will keep ticks away as well.  Ivermectin seems to work in my neck of the woods.

I've been using CyLence on my horses. We have a lot of timber around our house and battle them. Also agree with worming.

My husband has been telling me this for years. I finally let him get a few chicks this spring. I'm hoping they help with the bugs and stuff.

DIY Spot On

-Bottle of mineral oil

-Permethrin concentrate

- 12 cc syringe

Draw up 4-6cc of mineral oil.

Draw rest up with the concentrate.

Gently shake it.

Apply it like the typical spot on. Poll area, hocks, knees, ankles. Along their back. along their mane. Flanks, end of the tail bone. Underline if you have the buffalo flies. Under their jaw, I do a stripe down their face. Use the whole 12 cc.

Works great keeping ticks off. WAY cheaper than the Spot Ons you buy in a store. Esp if you have several horses to do!

We apply Equispot or Freedom Spot
They do help with ticks, I can't see any fly difference.

When ticks are rally bad in the Spring we also sprinle on Sevin dust to the tails, legs and mane to help

Yes to EquiSpot! Instead of using the applicator it comes in, I squirt it into a cup and use a paintbrush to apply it. No waste that way and better control of the product. I live in tick-haven and this stuff works great. Some horses are sensitive to it though.
