Has anyone ever dealt with this before? Yesterday, my mare (the one that was in the trailer when we were involved in the car wreck 1 month ago) was straining to poop. Long story short, we medicated her and kept an eye on her as she was pooping small amounts throughout the day and she did not appear to be uncomfortable. At around 6am when was I checking her again, I was hoping it had passed but instead she was still straining and beginning to look like she was in pain so I took her straight in. The vet found an area of the colon that was inflammed and swollen on the top of the lumen with a tear in the lining of the wall and a much smaller area on the bottom part with similar appearance (no visible tear however). They ran blood tests, palpated, scoped and ultrasounded her. On the ultrasound there appears to be small air bubbles in the swollen and inflammed tissue consistent with a tear. They then tubed her with electrolytes, mineral oil and epsom salts and put in a catheter (she's very bad for shots). The plan thus far is to withhold feed for 24hrs and start an aggressive round of IV antibiotics, along with tubing her daily and daily rectal untrasounds to track her progress. She is expected to stay at the vet for roughly 5 days. When she is allowed to eat it will be a wet mash. Just wondering what other people's outcomes were and what I should expect. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Sending prayers and positive thoughts your way for her
I haven't dealt with anything but colic caused by a flipped cecum, gas colic and and impaction colic. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Do the vets think this problem could have started because of the trailer accident? It seems a stretch to think it could have been lurking for a month before being a problem. But I was just wondering.
