For grass only hay, what is your preferred grass to cut? Crested wheat, brome grass, timothy, etc? TIA
My favorite is Orchard Grass/Alfalfa. But for a grass only, Orchard Grass or a good Bermuda. Preferably 2nd cutting.
I have yet to have a horse like Timothy. Not matter when it was cut. I don't see why people think it's the "horse" hay.
My main hay is high quality alfalfa. I prefer timothy to compliment the alfalfa. Not as much of a kick as some other grass hay so I can feed a bit more to keep the horses munching longer.

I completely agree! My husband is insisting on getting a truck of timothy and I am dead set on orchard, the orchard is cheaper! I honestly don't think people really know the difference and they like timothy because it lasts longer, well DUH! the horses don't like it so they only eat it if they have to.
In my area (SoCal), Teff grass and 2nd cutting Timothy. I won't feed the bermuda we have in here (not the same as the coastal bermuda in the midwest)

When I was researching hay during a really bad drought, I read that orchard grass hay had a higher sugar content than Timothy and that was one reason horses seem to prefer it over timothy.
