So I’ve suspected my mare might be a bleeder for about two months. She suddenly started refusing the gate, coughs, rubs her nose etc. She never actually showed outward symptoms until last night and was bleeding from her nostril after our run. I’m taking her to the vet next week to have her officially diagnosed and come up with a treatment plan but I’m feeling like a prettt rotten jockey for asking her to perform when she’s not feeling 100%. I haven’t been running this mare very long due to having a baby last year, so I don’t really feel like I have a solid starting point as far as knowing what she’s capable of when she’s 100%. I’ve always felt like she has more to give but we are still 1.5 seconds off the winning time.

So so I guess what I’m looking for is success stories for those of you who have had bleeders and how their performance and mentality has improved after starting treatment. I need some encouragement if you don’t mind sharing. Thanks all

I have a bleeder and ran her on lasix for a few years, she was misserable on lasix. We gave her a year off and when I brought her back I started her on Race Today from Vetline.  BEST decision EVER!!! I no longer use lasix and she is a new horse. I ride her at least 5 days a week and do a ton of long trotting. Hope this helps, I know how frustrating this it. Best of luck.

Edit : I also give her Equipulmin when I run her.

What did the Lasix do that made her miserable? Did you run her prior to knowing she was a bleeder?

Ive heard a lot of good things about Race Today. I think I’m going to start her on that ASAP

She hated the needles and she was cranky, couldn't touch her without her freaking out.

She is a total different horse now, she loves her ears and face being touched again.

Race today is and was a life saver.

You need to have your horse scoped right after a run. Don't make the same mistake I did. I was told to have my mare scoped & wasn't told to do it after her run. I had her scoped a week later & nothing showed up. We thought she just had allergies. She had some time off, like 2 years & I sent her to a reputable person to ride her. He called me & told me she was coughing up blood clots. He said, I thought you had this mare scoped for her coughing, I said I did. He said after her run. I said no, I was told by her rider jsut to have it done at my convienence. BIG WRONG. Have it done right after you run. I was so angry that all this time she was a deep in the lungs bleeder & this sorry P.O.S. so called pro who fut her didn't tell me the right way to do this.

So my plan is to run her at a rodeo the night before she is scoped to hopefully recreate the scenario that she bled with the other day. If she doesn’t visibly bleed then I will take her to the track and run her

Curious if anyone on this board has tried Troy Brandenburgs bleeder recommendations of the herbs Mo Lung and SRS that he sells? I'm skeptica as I don't know anyone around me that uses these, yet he swear by this combo...or is there more testimonials of the Race today by Vetline? I hate hate using lasix, it takes the run out of my horse unfortunetly

Go to a big barrel race where a vet is on the grounds. That way right after your run you can get your horse scoped. That is the only way to get a true result.
