Today is
So I have a 3 year old that was recently treated for ulcers. He has hay all day, but he is in training and I wanted to supplement his diet for added weight gain. I know I'm supposed to stay low starch and he has been getting Outlast and Cool Gut. What can I do to help him look better? Strategy? Rice Bran? Also, does anyone know the difference between Outlast and Cool Gut...or am I just feeding the same thing with different names? Thanks in advance!
There are a ton of posts about this...but I'll tell you what has worked (so far) for me.
After treating with omeprazole, my mare gets alfalfa pellets, Poulin ETec One (no grain or molasses in it), free choice hay and a some alfalfa. Supplement wise she gets U Shield and I just started her on Redmonds Daily Stress Relief. She only gets grain once a day.
I went to a barrel race last weekend and she was really calm. She didn't act up at the gate at all, which is a good sign that her stomach is not bothering her.
At some point I'm probably going to add rice bran to her diet too. Which, by the way, is also good for adding calories to put weight on.
After dealing with grade 4 ulcers I changed my whole feed plan. Renew Gold, alfalfa pellets, unlimited timothy hay, Platinum and Ulcer Gard when hauling/racing/stress situations.
My gelding is on Ulc-R-Aid and out to pasture 12 - 16 hours a day. He has a bermuda/timothy mix hay available while inside. He gets 3/4 pound Nutrena Empower ration balancer morning and evening plus a Joint/Hoof/Coat supplement.
Free choice grass hay 24/7 (or pasture), lots of alfalfa, and NO grain! If one needs a little extra we will give them rice bran. They also get free choice mineral.
