What's the deal on required paperwork? I'm starting to research and ask around but figured I'd ask here too. So we are in Texas, headed to look at a horse in Louisiana this weekend. If we end up buying him and hauling back to Texas are we required to have more than a bill of sale and an UTD clean coggins? Hes got both ready to go.

I bought my gelding in Ohio and I live in Vermont, and I had to get a health cetificate at the prepurchase.

A updated coggins and a health certificated in your name, thats all I ever had when crossing state lines. Are you can call your County Extension agent, maybe things have changed since my last time.

I checked online and all I found said they needed a current coggins coming into Texas and get a health certificate within 14 days of arrival. Now with the VS outbreak no horses allowed in that are from affected counties, this info was updated July 22.

We use to travel quite a bit in between New Mexico and Texas with our horses... never once did we have to do anything special either way in or out. Never even had been stopped. . so who knows.. I'm hoping just the coggins and bill of sale will suffice!

Get a health paper too!!!! Whenever you cross state lines, you need a coggins AND health. While CO is a brand State, and TX isn’t....when I bought Sidekick out of TX, had I not had the original HEALTH he traveled on, I’d have been in a world of hurt. I’d rather have too much than not enough. Too many horror stories from people that had horses impounded because they didn’t have the right paperwork.

Agree, I rather have all my bases covered, I never was stoped either, but I bet if that one time I didnt have a health certificate I would have been stoped, and that would have been my luck, so better safe then sorry.

I would definitely get health papers. They are cheap and easy to get since there is a current coggins just done.

We had a somewhat uneventful trip, other than 1 tire blowout on the trailer.. empty, thankfully! We knew we were going to be needing new tires sooner than later anyway so we just ended up replacing all of them on our trip. Found some good ones $100 cheaper a tire than our local tire shop quoted us so it kinda worked out! This little horse was totally worth the trip. Hes awesome! I rode him, my hubby roped a set on him and then my daughter got on him. He took such good care of her when she went to rope a slow steer ..  she hasn't done it before, just on the ground or at a walk so this was her first time really coming out of the box after one. You couldn't have wiped that smile off her face. She scored a few on him too.. hes like a rock! He also runs barrels and poles very well!

I need to get more photos of him. But hes super cute, paint and you can just tell hes an old soul and he really is a total sweetheart. He hauled like a dream. Almost 6 hours drive.. didnt even know he was back there. He settled right in at our home. My 2 horses that are here right now ran to greet him... I was nervous my old grumpy fart gelding was going to be mean and ugly because he always has been in the past to new horses coming in. They sniffed each other over the fence and that was it.. no drama, no squealing or pawing... it's like my old man knew this guy wasnt going to be able to be pushed around lol! They told me the horse was definitely not the low man in a herd. I was able to stall them next to each other in the barn too and they are just standing next to each other at the wall hanging out quietly. Hes approx 16 yrs old, been roped on by pretty much every level but specializes in teaching beginners. Hes on auto pilot and he goes to the same spot every time. Shes going to have a blast learning on him I think. Hes so easy going and laid back.. I love that! A few pics my kiddo took... hes already her selfie pard...

Thank you! I'm so proud of her, today she accepted Jesus into heart forever and got baptized at church. She got saved at church camp a few weeks ago. She caught the roping bug from church lol! They let them rope calves, she told me she out roped the boys... atta girl! I cant wait to see her get more confidence on this guy in the roping pen. This horse is so gentle when shes done with him and ready to move up, he's going to be handed down to Jacob & Colt to learn on. He came with the name "Bill" lol! We've been calling him a few different names to see what's going to stick... we just arent thrilled with his given name as that's my hubby's name haha! I'm usually really good and quick with giving a name and I just cant seem to get this one done!
