Anyone have a horse that gets chronic abscesses? I have owned this mare for almost 16 years and she never got abscesses until the past few years. She is on a steady shoeing schedule. Her stall is cleaned twice a day. She goes out for a few hours every evening. She is a weenie about bugs so she is happy to just go out for a bit in the evenings when it cools down and they are fewer. She is navicular so she has gotten the Osphos shot the past few years. Is this some strange side effect of Osphos? What could be causing these? They are in the back feet usually also. I'm at a loss!

I'd talk to my vet about Isoxiprine for her or check out Equinety XL. Isoxiprine helps promote better blood flow into the foot capsule, it was what was suggested to me when my geldign was healing from a huge abscess up against the digital cushion and then after it was healed I've kept them on the Equinety.

Is it the same foot or different feet?  Chronic abscesses could be a sign of PPID and with her age, I wouldn't be shocked if she had that.  Especially if its multiple feet.  If It's the same foot, same location, every time, I would start thinking- is there a foreign body, bone sequestrum, maybe even keratoma.  Probably at this point your best bet is to go to your vet.

I would highly doubt osphos is the reason for the abscesses. Most common adverse effects of osphos is mild colic and then it can be hard on their kidneys sometimes.

I've been reading up on the Equinety LX and like the sound of it, so thinking about trying it on my IR gelding, where are you buying your Equinety LX?

It is different feet not the same foot repeatedly. What is PPID?

I would X-ray her feet and measure sole depth. If she’s thin soled she could bruise easily . I’d she has less than 15mm of some depth a pour in pad would help.

i would also make sure she doesn’t have laminitis. A horse with mild laminitis will get frequent abscesses.
