What is your opinion on Jesse's Topaz as a barrel sire? https://www.6666ranch.com/en/quarter-horses/stallions/ranch-performance-stallions/jesses-topaz.html His oldest foals are 3 year olds this year so he really hasn't had time to really prove himself as a sire yet (in the barrel pen anyway).  I am interested in breeding our cow bred mare to him and wondered if I am putting too much cow in the pedigree?   https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/shay+mon+doc She has shown a lot of speed in barrels and poles with limited hauling.

We bred one of our mares to him this spring in the hopes of raising a barrel horse. She’s running bred though, but I think he would cross well on either cow bred or running bred mares with his bloodlines.

If you watched the Road to the Horse, one of those colts was by him, and another was a half brother to him (same dam). Watching his colt could tell you something about their trainability.

I’m not sure why the 6666’s never did anything with him (riding, showing, racing, etc.), and I would love to know the reason. Maybe he got injured or something, who knows.

ETA: if you’re asking to see if there’s a market for the possible cross, I’m not sure you can solicit like that on the forum, but I may be wrong.

Thanks for the response.  I have looked at the colts that are selling in the Back To The Remuda sale and they really got me interested in this stud.  I am also really curious why he wasn't ridden/shown.  Wonder if anyone out there knows anything about that.  I really need a quiet minded stallion for this mare as she can be a bit on the hot side. Thank you for noting that his colts were used in the Road to the Horse. I didn't realize that!    No I am not looking to sell the colt on this thread, just wondering if I am working with too much cow here. I am not a barrel racer but am related to many....I rope and am pretty sure the colt of this cross would rope if nothing else.

From what I’ve read on earlier forums, the MJP horses can be late bloomers and take awhile to mature, but end up making solid horses (I have no experience with them), however I have ridden a few PIW horses and they have all been fantastic to ride. Everyone seems to have different opinions on them though. As for too much cow, I don’t think that’s a problem with the cross you’re looking at.

We had a client call the 6666 ranch and ask about Jesses Topaz (mainly about his feet as she has a mare with horrible feet), and she said they were very forthcoming with information. From his bloodlines to the videos and pictures of him I’ve seen, and his colts that are out there, I was impressed, which is why we bred to him.
