Location: Missouri | Hi, y'all. My momma says some of you want to meet me! I was born March 19, 2018, and I'm about 1100# (not bad when I was around 40# at a day old). My momma says I is a Red Angus/Irish Setter cross, because I am a giant puppy dog. She also says I is special. I run the place for daddy and momma. Now that I'm big I'm lots of help. Momma says so, Daddy doesn't. There's lots of common calves and cows around here. They're all nice (except that big bull..momma thinks he's something great. I would show him who's boss around here if they would just let me), but not special like me. I keep them company so they aren't scared, show the new babies the best places to take naps, and how to open gates. Most of the common calves don't stay forever, like me, except some of the girls. My momma says we all have a purpose, and I am destined for more. She even put that on my birthday banner!
When I was born my cow momma didn't want me. She paid all her attention to my twin. The man there gave me a bottle and put me in the barn. Then he tooks me to the sale barn. I was so scared and so cold. The concrete floor was freezing and hurt to lay on. The bigger common calves kept pushing me and stepping on me, and it was so loud. Then the two legged lady come. She scooped me under her coat, sat on the hard floor and I laid in her lap until I got warm. I laid there for two hours and decided she was nice, even if her didn't have milk. Her told me not to worry, cuz I was going home with her and would have lots of bottles. Her had to leave and I bawled and bawled until I saw her come back. One of those big pushy common calves stepped on me and hurt my leg! They shoved me in the ring, and pushed me some more. Next thing I knew momma was hugging me and I was back on her lap. She said I was hers and she was my new momma. She worried about my leg, but said might be a good thing, cuz since I limped she wanted me the most. And not to tell Daddy, but I would've been the highest price bottle calf Green City had ever sold! See, I has always been special!
I gots to my new place, my belly was full, and momma held me and gave me lots of love. My leg got better right away. Then, I started getting sick. Really, really sick. I got poked in my neck lots. Still hates pokes! Momma held me, and slept with me, and cried a lot. Talked to calfdog doctors all over three states. And her and daddy kept trying. Then I gots better and was bucking and running and playing. Momma still slept with me just in case. That, and I would bawl pathetic when she tried to leave me. Momma and I both bawled pathetic when daddy said I was too big for a bottle. Momma would sneak me one when she fed the littles. I messed that up cuz one day daddy was feeding and I whopped him good when he wouldn't give me mine! No more bottles for Calfdog. Momma and I both got in trouble.
Now I is big and so strong!! I still run to the gate bawling when my momma pulls up. The other day she left. WITH. MY. TRAILER. And she didn't take me for a ride. I loves rides. Daddy said I stood at the gate and bawled for 30 minutes. I still want to lay in her lap, but her lap got too little. I try hard though. I stand at the house door and rattle the knob when I want in. I can ALMOST get it turned enough. I can turn on the water thingy on the side of the house. It's fun to make it spray and cool off in a big puddle! Daddy isn't too proud of that. In the mornings I stand on the deck and watch through the window until I see them move, then remind them that all four of my bellies are hungry. I love to lay on the deck in the sun, and I invite the common calves too! I keep daddy's work bench cleared off. He's really messy, leaving things out on it. And I loves to help him or my brothers work on vehicles. I can get hoses and wires and pieces off from under the hood quicker than can! My two legged brothers and sister are fun to play with. I gets to be wild and rough with them and daddy, but I make sure nobody gets too close to momma. She's mine! I'm real careful with her. Even when she's asleep beside me I is careful not to step on her. Now that I'm a big boy she thinks it's fun to ride me like her horses. Ugh, but I gets curry combed so fair trade I guess. Saturday they weaned calves. Seems kinda mean. I know how scared I was when I got left by my first momma. I worried about the babies crying, so I kept opening the gate to go see them. Daddy said I was gonna get in big trouble, so momma put a chain on it. Bummer.
I gets lots of common calf feed. I might eat some of the littles' feed too. Momma gives me special treats! I love bread, but not the crumbly brown bread or the dry end pieces. Blech. Cinnamon graham crackers are my favorite! I loves those little cinnamon Teddy Grahams. Daddy says it like a slot machine, dropping them in my mouth. One day momma got ones from the Dollar Store. Nope, not having it! I wants REAL Teddy Grahams. Momma buys me apple pies, and I loves pieces of apple. When she feeds me them, I won't eat the part with seeds, but when daddy and brothers do I'm not so picky. We have a real apple tree, too. If I push my booty up against it and rub they fall off and I gets lots!! They laugh at me, but I thinks I'm smart! I loves cookies, all kinds of cookies! Momma brings me cut up cucumbers and all kinds of crunchy treats too! I know when she has white rattle-y sacks, she's been to the treat getting place. If she leaves her truck open I pull them ALLLL out. I think she buys stuff for the two leggeds, too, so I'm not taking chances mine get fed to them!
I'm so glad my momma found me! Her really loves me lots!! Her friends say me and her need to write a children's book about me. She thinks we might work on that this winter. She put a bunch of pictures of me in an album on her profile her, if you want to get to know me more. Nice to meet y'all!

Daddy had momma a copper eartag necklace made for Christmas just like mine!

Location: Missouri | Thanks, ladies!! Calfdog really is my whole heart. Yes, we have a cow/calf and feeder operation, but he is just DIFFERENT. I notice different personalities in a lot of our cattle, but Calfdog takes it to another level. He even has expressions. Quite readable ones. Fred, who has been around cattle his entire life, says he has never seen one like him in that aspect. I've probably spent way to much time pondering nature vs nurture with him. I've raised many bottle calves. None are like him. Is it because I spent so much time with him that first month? Or was he born with that extra something giving him so much personality? I know for a fact neither his momma cow nor his daddy are this way. He most definitely has emotions, and he picks up on mine. I seriously think he sees me as momma, not just food girl.
No matter which, I think this is a perfect example of divine choreography. God knew that little red calf needed me that cold morning, and he knew I needed that calf! LOL when I'm having a rough day or get grumpy, Fred tells me to go play with Calfdog - he knows that will bring me out of it!

a children's book is a MUST:)
At first I laughed at the idea. It's becoming more appealing though! I will finish my online degree in December (finally, at age 50!), so this winter might be a good time to play with writing one.

This is one of my warm fuzzy feel pics - great idea. I don't care what anyone says..Calfdog loves me! He is so not this way with anyone else. The other morning while giving him goodbye hugs he wanted on my lap. I wound up shoulders propped against the hay bale, his neck across my shoulder, front legs on one side of mine, body on the other, his shoulders in my lap. Couldn't move, didn't mind. Lol thought I would have to call work. Tell em gonna be late because Calfdog needed loves. What Calfdog wants, Calfdog gets!
