A National Treasure Behind the bucking chutes at every pro rodeo the cowboys mingle. They adjust their riggings, stretch their muscles and put their game faces on. Rodeo is predominantly a male sport made up of Ropers, Roughstock Riders, and Bull Riders. The stuff of Western Folklore that the rodeo fans pay money to see. But aren’t we forgetting something? What about the women – you know, the barrel racers…the girls that are faster than Miranda Lambert and equally as talented. Yes, those women…the women of prorodeo. Who are these women that are largely ignored by mainstream media and popular culture? Are we a society so caught up with entitlement and victim mentality we only pay attention to athletes that kneel for the anthem? What about those that stand proudly? Or for professional athletes that actually have to produce before they get paid? (These women pay to get in front of their audience. Think about that for a minute). They are beautiful and glamorous and range in ages all the way to 61. The sport is a great equalizer where a senior citizen can whip a teenager. These pro rodeo girls put to shame Bravo TV or the TLC with their “ real drama”. Rodeo gals don’t think twice about driving all night to make slack in the morning, and are left juggling their own credit cards to put fuel in the truck. You want real drama? Try maintaining a “best friend” relationship with your hauling partner, knowing you need to beat her the next day just to stay in the standings. Do this for a year at a time. Reality TV has nothing on these women. The show “Rodeo Girls” was fiction, sorry Jessica Holmberg Morris. You have come a long way since you were asked to run barrels - wearing nothing but boots and a bikini. Professional rodeo women do not have cosmetics named for them. But if they did their perfume might be “Leather and Linament”. Their denim jeans called “Busted Butts”. And a jewelry line? I don’t think so. Horses are way more important than rings. “My Dash Ta Fame is my Diamond” could be a necklace. So mainstream media..” Sports Illustrated”, “ Self Magazine” and others….here is my challenge to you. Put a professional barrel racer on the cover of your magazine because she is gorgeous and a role model to the youth in America who won’t get off the couch. Hey “People Magazine” put a professional barrel racer on the cover. Need a representative female athlete with moxie, driving a Ford King Ranch and pulling a 4 Star? Find a professional barrel racer to put a face to your ad campaign. “Good Morning America”? Here’s your chance to interview a professional barrel racer. Is the mainstream media afraid to feature our rodeo athletes because they fear retribution from PETA? Each of these ladies, ( and many more ), have a story to tell about hard work, values, and grit. They are winners. And they are grateful for their lives, families and country. Quiet professionals. Why can’t we see more of them? Let our “Rodeo Women” be role models, to teach the younger set about having goals and working towards them. About getting out of bed and off your butts and feeding your horse before yourself. About being more than just a pretty face. How about having a work ethic and accountability for your own success or failure. What about the values of rural living? It’s not a dying breed of women, it’s just being ignored. Let’s recognize real women competing for something other than a corporate position or a political office. Let’s make America Rural Again. Let’s showcase the women of rodeo!
