Location: North Central Iowa Land of white frozen grass | With all the shutdown of horse activities and no one wanting to travel. How much is this going to change the value of our horse industry. And yes I know this will pass at some point but it is going to have some long lasting affects. Lots of layoffs and 401Ks are going to make a lot of people feel a lot less wealthy going forward. Could we see 20% across the board for the next couple years. |

I think what you are saying is an absolute possibility. I am hopeful things will turn around in a couple of months. Even if they do, I feel that it will take several months afterward for everything to balance out again. I work in the oil and gas industry and my husband is a rope horse trainer. Many of his cutomers work in oil & gas. This could effect us tremendously. The bright side is that the company for whom I work is predominetly a natural gas producer, with hedged pricing far into the future. This will help sustain us during dark times. However if we see a total economical collapse, none of us are safe. I am praying and hoping. |

Location: Illinois | I don't think it will have a huge impact on horses. Not everyone's 401Ks have been affected, so far mines only down $50 and its got a very decent amount in it. And at 32 I still have at least 35 more years before I can retire anyway, so thats 35 years of ups and downs just like this that it's going to go through. We're still not even close to the hit that happened in 2008. Everyone I know is buying stock right now out of savings while its somewhat lower. Because they all know its going to go up again , why not use this opportunty to make money. My parents did that with CAT stock in 08, bought 1,000 shares between $30-32 each. When grandpa died in 2018 (my grandparents raised me), his half of the shares were sold at $141 a share. It was around a $54,000 profit which grandma uses to supplement her retirement now. You're obviously not going to get that kind of profit now, because the market isn't anyhwer enear that low. Its also still higher than it was just a couple years ago, so technically people are still ahead at the moment even with the current drop. People my age range who still have so long to go, who still are getting paid right now, really aren't taking much of a hit at all. So for those like me, buying horses will be no problem. For the older folks closer to retirement or retired that did take a hit, they might hold off or buy a cheaper horse until the market levels back out. But if they were buying horses 5 years ago when the stock market was lower than it is now, this probably isn't going to stop them. Even if we're $50k in debt, eating ramen noodles we're still entering the jackpots on the weekend. Broke doesn't seem to stop barrel racers |

Location: MD | I'm still getting calls and messages about good horses. This isn't just the $50,000 and up type purchases, either. Plenty of interest in horses priced in the $10 to $15k range. I actually do think right now is a great time to get a good deal on horses, as many people who live beyond their means will feel a strain, but I don't foresee this having a major impact on value as a hole. |

 Living within my means

Location: Randolph, Utah | I hadn't really thought about the horse market, I rarely buy or sell anything. I have wondered, if it goes on too long how many people won't be able to make their truck & trailer payments. What about foreclosures on homes? Will we see a flood of repossessions at the banks? Will the banks have to take a loss on these things to try and resell them? Try and recoup some of the money they were owed? Will dealerships and the vehicle manufacture lower prices on vehicles to try and get them to sell? So many questions. . . |

I think we will likely see a significant drop in prices. My 401K dropped almost 20%. If that loss is sustained, people will modify their buying habbits. |

I know of a 12 hand buckskin/white pinto pony mare that only walks and trots for super cheap. Only thing is she was recently diagnosed with Cushings, but very manageable. She shows no symptoms. Absolute sweetheart. Not a mean bone in her body. |

Ms. Dr. Phil
Location: My happy place | Jake I what you are looking for is always expensive. I do believe you are headed for a buyers market. Anyone that thinks this won't really hurt horse sales is crazy. Yes the good horses will always be high but they just got a lot cheaper. Even the oil money in TX is scary, now the gas people will still be buying like crazy. Just my thoughts but I sold horses in the 80's and it was bad. If what Fatchance posted doesn't scare you nothing will. |

I hope you find a "Dan" for your needs, Miss Mary. I paid 1500 for him when he was supposedly 14 (actually closer to 20) and I had 19 amazing years with him. My daddy couldn't believe I was paying that much (his last horse purchase was 100 years previous when a horse and bridle and saddle cost him 250!!). But he now agrees my Doodlebug was priceless. . . Good luck in your search |
