Hey y'all, I hope everyone is faring well with their equine friends during this covid craziness!! Amid all the craziness I found myself on Craigslist (I haven't been on that site in years.. do y'all ever get the urge to get on there or is it just me??), anyway I type "horse" in the search bar and sure enough there is a little AQHA registered mare looking rather skinny and in need of some TLC and wouldn't you know it she was in my very (small) hometown. She was literally two roads away. I did some facebook and all pedigree digging and found that her bloodlines are pretty well known in halter horse world and that her sire has MANY babies on the ground. She's 3 and is completely (well from what I was told) unbroke.. thats great for me because that means no bad habbits to break. Well I decide to go see her and I'm not completly convinced.. she had some sort of skin issue, a gash right on her flank.. the worst area to attempt to doctor or examine on an unbroke horse, butttttt she was quiet, not acting crazy and didn't seemed drugged. I did think that her current body condition of being about 300ish lbs under weight and whatever skin issue she had going on did have something to do with her personality being docile... but she didn't have panic in her eyes and bless her.. she was so dang itchy.. By the way that WEIRD skin thing?? LICE!!!! OMG I legit didn't even know that horses could get lice.. Never heard of it!! freaked me out! but shes treated and on the way to hair regrowth. Here's the thing; I have this serendipitous belief that EVERYTHING happens for a reason.. 1. Me not being able to attend my last two months of dental hygiene school due to covidd. 2. Me looking on craigslist out of curiosity for the first time in years and clicking on a horse for sale two streets away. 3. Following meeting her I mentioned the posibility of purchasing her to my SO who replies "I just had the biggest Dejavu moment right now of you saying this exact thing". (for those that have said this many times to their spouse and brought home a new horse) I have had only one in the last 9 years due to life and school I didn't have time or money for more than 1. sooooooooo I bought her I am going to attempt to include her day 1 and day 8 photos to show the difference just a week has made. I will also list all the things I have been feeding and and supplementing her with. I know that she needs to be vetted and she has been isolated. I am waiting for our lockdown to subside a little before calling my vet to do her full checks, shots, and floating. She is pigeon-toed and I have ZERO experince with a horse with this and I would like to do right by her and make sure that her feet are cared for properly.. ALLL ADVICE APPERCIATED... SHOES? BAREFOOT? CROCS?? Okay Details: Registered AQHA name: Hot Instincts Barn name: FERGIE!! >>> my go to karoke song! I couldn't help it!! I think I'm going to train her to come from the pasture while I belt it out!! haha Age: 3 Training: I am doing the Clinton Anderson Fundamentals with her and shes doing really well. Feed: Grass hay for the first 4 days, then I switched her to an alfalfa/orchard grass compacted bales in a haychix net to keep food in front of her at almost all times. I already had enrich for my "gets fat from looking at feed gelding" so I slowly started her on that with the outlast with it. After two days of that I added the amplify Fat supplement and fed it at the recommended ratios, upping it gradually. The guy I bought her from had her feet trimmed and said that he wormed her with ivermectrin. I rewormed her a week later due to the lice and the fact that she most likely needed that double dose as she had just been turned out.."very vauge but thats what I was told". She has free choice salt , and I also gave her two doses of b12 oral gel to help her skin issues. okay now the real goods PICTURES! This is my first rescue and all replies are appreciated!! Thanks
