| Has anyone heard of feeding chia seeds for weight gain on horses? A friend told me about feeding them that it helps the guts absorbtion (sp) of nutrients. I have been trying to put weight on Floyd for the last couple months. He has been putting on weight but not as fast as I think he should. I started him on the chia 3 weeks ago and the weight tape says he has added an inch around his barrel. His butt looks better too. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this, used it and what the results are. |

Location: midwest mama | Yep - I feed a larger dose when I want to put weight on a horse, and a smaller amount just to maintain them. Helps make them shiny too. LOVE it! |

| I am going to try my mare on it. She's a hard keeper struggles through every winter with weight probably has a body score between 3 and 4 right now already have her on forco and rice bran she also has an old injury and arthritis and it's really supposed to be helpful in both pain management and healing and lubricating joints. we will see how it goes I am going to try 2oz a day to start. Hopeful but I feel like I have tried everything and never found anything that significantly helped! |

Health food stores, or organic section of grocery stores. I actually bought some at Target. I heard they were for weight LOSS in humans as they absorb liquid and make you feel fuller. And that they are good for hydration and also joint lubricant. So IDK about weight gain? |

Location: midwest mama | I get mine at Costco.
Google chia for horses and there are lists of what conditions chia is good for.
One of the reasons it is good for weight gain, hair coat, etc. is that it contains a lot of omegas.

Sam's Club has them cheaper than getting them in bulk... Bulk meaning 20lb sack. |

I did when I fed them. Flaxseed I ground up but I didn't read anywhere that said it was necessary for chia. |

| JMHO if your looking for weight gain I would buy Mega Oil by Oxygen instead of chia seeds. These seeds are not horse friendly. No I don't sell Mega oil but I use it & it is fantastic & it is safe & made for horses. I got mine from Rosie Bradley .She is on FB. |

I was looking for the omegas and the sand clearing benefits. My horse hates flax seed and psyllium.
why are they not horse friendly? |

Try getting the orange medimucil from wal mart. It is Psyllium . Your horse will probably like that. Thats what I use I I add it to my horses grain & they eat it up. . You will get all the omegas from Mega Oil. I didn't say anything about flax. Actually flax is wonderful. I have fed it since I was a kid showing jumpers & that was back in the 60's. I just threw a handful in my horses grain. All us kids in the barn used it. No problem with our horses eating it in their grain. |

Location: The Great Northwest | Getty Equine Nutrition has Chia. The Chia seed is a good source of Omegas without the over abundance of 6. To put weight on or keep it on a horse feed Alfalfa. It is a quality protein for horses that is competing needs to keep or make muscle. It has a lot of calories. |
