I have a dilemma I was hoping some feedback here could help with. I'm considering buying a LQ and am debating between a 3H and a 4H. I'm a single mom so my budget is tight for this purchase. This means I'm looking at used trailers. I can get a loan but I don't want to go deep into debt on it. I have 3 girls and myself I'm planning for. My youngest (toddler) will be sharing a horse for awhile like 2-3 more years. Do I get a 4H now or a 3H and trade in or sell/buy later to go up in size? Is it reasonable to assume if I buy a used 4H and take good care of it it'll last me another 8-10 years or should I get a 3H now and upgrade when we get the 4th horse?

I feel that when you buy something big like that (trailer, car etc) you always lose money. So if I can avoid buying things "twice" I will. My advice would be, get a 4H. That way you won't lose any money when you trade the 3H in for a 4H.

Like you said, if you take care of it it should last you a long time.

Our LQ is from 2003, bought it from a friend, that has taken real good care of it. She replaced several items but on a trailer that age I'd expect things to be replaced at some point. We've owned it for about 7 years now, and really only had to get the generator fixed once. But that was because I didn't do the monthy run on it.

Plus, you can use the 4th stall for storage if you don't need it for a horse. You'd be surprised how much stuff you will be taking. lol.

I'd get the 4-H.

We have been trying to be more financially conservative, and in that spirit we bought a 3 horse because we found a great deal on one. We too will need a 4 horse in a few years, but because this was such a good deal we decided to go with what we needed and was comfortable with paying NOW. We can always sell this one and get another one in the future. However, you never know what the future holds, especially years down the road. If my daughter decides to play ball instead of rodeo, then we may not end up needed a 4 horse after all.

I would shop around and see what you can find that fits comfortably in your budget. Then choose from there, whether it be a 3 or 4 horse.

Get the 4 horse now.  If you maintenance trailers, they will last a long time.  You should expect many more than 8-10 years if you take care of it.

I'd go with the 4 horse.  You will love the extra hole for storage of things until you actually need it for a horse.

4 horse for sure. That way you won't have to go thru the hassle of selling it and having to buy another. Just take good care of it, get the maintenance done as scheduled and save up for new tires. I've often thought of downsizing my 4 horse to a 3 because I only have 1 horse right now but when I start looking at used 3 horse trailers, I don't like what I'm seeing. My horse appreciates the extra space and we enjoy the large LQ. And realistically we are in good shape on our trailer from a financial standpoint, so we just decided to hang onto it. It's got everything I want on it, including that ramp. Many don't come with that feature that I've come across at our price point.

A 4 horse would meet all your needs better. I have a 4 horse it's not a living quarters but has the tack/dressing room with A/C and I have lived in it during 3/4 day barrel races and haul 2 horses and the extra stalls was used for hauling hay, feed, ice chest's.

Even if you are only hauling 3 horses now you would be better off with a 4 horse.

And it just depends on what brand of trailer that you get that you want to last.

You are on the tipping point of what truck you should have to tow with between a three horse LQ and a four horse LQ. Depending on the length of the LQ and weight of the trailer, and whether or not you will tow in the mountains vs flat country, you may need a dually. When we had a Four Star lot in California we encouraged people to pull with a dually if the LQ trailer was bigger than a three horse with a fully set up nine foot LQ. Up to that point, a single drive truck worked fine. Of course you can go somewhat bigger if your towing is not in the mountains. Before everone jumps on here and says that they tow a four horse 14"LQ with pop outs with a 3/4 ton 2wd, I am sure you do, but shouldn't.

Good point. We upgraded to a F350 dually when we upgraded our trailer to the 4H LQ  our trailer is 46ft.. my husband is having airbags installed to help with the load. We just had a flatbed installed and the ease of hooking up to the trailer is worth every single penny!

Well I got curious and grabbed my tape because the insurance says 28 lol!! I think they made an error which I need to address .... my hubby is a truck driver and he said I was wrong at 36 he said go measure lol!! It's 40 .... good grief... OK 40ft on the nose! Calling my insurance company haha!!! Between me and you, it might as well be 50! I do not enjoy trying to maneuver that sucker around the corner driveway to put it back after I use it.. I usually wuss out and just pull straight in and wait for my husband to get home to do it... I know,  I know.....

I got my CDL last year and had to be able to parallel park my 40' trailer and dually. Not fun but I got it done.

Yes!!! Flatbeds are awesome because you can see over the top on your backing exercises. Technically federal law says you need a CDL and insurance won't cover you if something happens.
