I ended up getting a 1/2 5 star pad that I really REALLY like but I think it may be too thin for my setup. I have an Uber wide flat backed barrel shaped horse lol! Did I mention wide and flat??? I have an xx wide double j with foam bottom that I believe fits him good, I've just been struggling to find the right pad.  1in seems too thick.  I get too much roll... I got a 3/4 and it was better, not much roll at all but it's not a barrel pad and it's too long and wide for my saddle. I keep hearing about the flex fit but that seems like it would be for high withered horses.. mine is exactly the opposite of that description.  Was thinking of trying a 7/8 in a 5 star I get very little to NO roll on my saddle with that 1/2 " but it's just too thin I think.. I don't like the way it feels under my saddle against his back... like no cushion at all for him. This will be pad attempt #4 then I hear alot about saddle right pads but those are a bit out of my budget. But after what I've already wasted on failed attempts...

I have a 1/2" 5 Star too and its more of a liner I think, All I really use in my 5 Stars are the 3/4" and 7/8". I have more then a few of these and love the way they fit my different horse's. I would love to get a Saddle Right and try it out, if I ever get back to riding like I use too

Do you have any 5stars that are fleece bottom? Or is it just fleece lined around the edges? Interestingly enough I tried on one if my old diamond wool pads I had used with my cutting saddle way back when.. mostly wanted to see how the shape fit him.. its not contoured... while it's obviously way too long and wide but I actually kinda liked the fit with my saddle .. felt more of a cushion for him. And I like the way it set my saddle on him when I was sitting on him. Might just need the flat non contoured back instead..

Again Martha Josey advice.......use a Navajo blanket underneath your pad.  Less roll and absorbs the sweat which a pad won't do.

My old school hubby suggested the same! I may try that today and see how it goes. I have several of those blankets that are collecting dust. Thank you!

Non of my 5 Stars have the fleece bottoms, just the natural wool felt, and these pads are made to wick the sweat without adding a second pad under them. The 1/2" is more of a liner so this way if you did want to add a pretty Navajo blanket the 1/2 inch will help with more padding that you want for your horse, I just remembered this last night thinking why did I get a 1/2" 5 Star?!! Its because I wanted to use a neat Navajo that I got and the 3/4 made it to thick to use with my Navajo pad so the 1/2 inch was perfect. But I do use a BOT liner under my 5 Stars, to keep my pads cleaner.

I have had the fleece bottom pads in a different brand (back in the day), and they were really slippery made my saddles roll a bit untill they got really sweaty and flatted out while being used, then my saddles would sit better.

I would think if your saddle is a good fit then really all you need is a 3/4 inch pad. The 3/4" is really all that I use, my 7/8 is for my more narrow built fella.

After speaking to someone at 5star I decided to go with a 3/4 flex fit. I truly hope this is "the one" I do love that 5star I got it feels great right out the box.. you can feel the quality in it. Oh and I did end up ordering that mohair breast collar too.. it comes in Monday! My new 5 star, don't know when it'll be here.. said allow 3 week build time..

Its to bad that Deanna (RockyRoad) has not been around latley, she could have saved you a few bucks with an order to 5 Star. I got all of mine from her and she helped me customize them, they are really cool.

All of my 5 Star pads are 1/2" thick, but I work hard to make sure saddles fit as well as they can.

Only exception is my new horse. I decided to do 3/4" for her. When you look at the two pads, it's really, really hard to see much difference in the thickness.

You could also try adding the 5 Star pad liner. That is 1/4" thick.

I used a 1/2" 5 star with one of my geldings. He was super stout and his saddle fit well. The 1/2" was perfect.

Typically I use a 3/4" with most of the horses though.

I ended up trying a Navajo blanket under my 1/2" 5star while I wait for my 3/4 flex fit and wow... it fits absolutely perfect! Absolutely no roll and a really great sweat pattern.. I kinda wish I hadn't spent the money on another 5star but it sure won't hurt to have it plus I'm curious how the flex fit will work on him.
