We have a 4 yr. old young gelding who was diagnosed with ocd lesions in his stifles. We did the stall rest/ small pen for 3 months as diagnosed when he was two and treated with pentosan polysulfate and bute. Re xrayed and lesions were gone. Vet was very happy with the results. Last summer he started showing lameness again and xray revealed bog spavin in the right hock.
This horse belongs to my teenage daughter and she trained him from scratch herself. He currently only lopes to and trots around his barrels as we don't want to push him until we resolve this (hopefully). He is super nice and is an own son of Rare Bar.
Has anyone used the arthroscopic surgery as a treatment for this and if so. What was the outcome and the cost of such a procedure? Thank you

We did surgery one one for OCD lesions in his stifle. The lesions were REALLY bad and went on and on forever all through the joint. The outcome wasnt good. Total cost start to finish was right at $6000. That included all including hospital stay.  I *believe* the prognosis with hocks is much better then with stifles and it depends on how extensive the lesions are but your vet can guide you better.

Thanks for your response. I don't feel his are bad and plan to have him totally re evaluated before proceeding with any surgical options. Just fishing for success and non succesful stories to help make a decision.

There was another gal on here who did OCD surgery on stifle and it was a huge success. Trying to think of who it was.....

I work at an equine vet. We do 2-5 arthroscopic surgeries a week. Some OCD some chip removals. I have yet to hear of an OCD patient that did not return sound to performing (most race horses).

I have a now 4 year old that was diagnosed with OCD lesion in her hock at 6 weeks.  I had it arthroscopically removed at that time and it cost me around $2800 including hospital stay.  She is sound, no problems, but I did wait until she was 3 to start riding her.  Started her on the pattern this summer and she is doing fine.  I know that the younger it is taken care of, the better chance for no further problems, so I was lucky in that respect.

I know it's different for every horse but I hear our surgeon quote 2500 for 1 joint on a yearling and 4000? For 2. We usually don't keep them more than 3-5 days after. I have seen horses go home next day to people that can handle bandages and meds.

I had it done on a 5 year old mare. She came back sound but didn't come back to competition in the time frame the vets told me, so I decided to sell her as a broodie. She is in foal to Tres Seis and I honestly believe 100% that after a year off she would come back and be phenomenal. She's actually for sale on BHW but there's no way I can afford her at the price she's at now.. but her baby will be a 3/4 sibling to Dashing Czar.

We have a 2 year old which was just diagnosed with the same thing OCD in his stifle.
I was just wondering if anyone had fed the OCD pellets and if they had helped for this diagnosis.

Wow.   I have heard that OCD's in stifles are just very problematic for barrel horses.  Thanks for sharing your story.

We had a filly at the track that had an 80 speed index as a 2 year old. We discovered some small OCD's in her stifles. Had them removed. She turned around as a 3 year old, ran a 103 SI and was Stakes Placed.
