What is everyone's thoughts on equine mortality/major medical insurance? I have a 5yr old and an 8yr old horse that would cost anywhere from $1450 to $1900 to insure them a year, depending on which insurance company I went with.  I have had previous horses insured but only used it once on each of them and they outlived when the ins compay would cover the mortality.  Just trying to figure out if the $ are worth it, or just open up a separate account and payroll deduct $ each payday into that account to cover any emergencies.

OR can we purchase jsut the major medical on them which would still be about $1200 a year

decisions, decisions 0- your thoughts please

I know because if you pay for allot of years and never use it but like a friend of mine said,

it only takes one time of using it for it to pay for itself.

I paid for years and never used it.  Now I feel it was a waste of money as I actually hadn't invested all that much money in these good horses and fact is could have managed financially if I had lost one.  It's an individual choice.  Same goes for vet bills......if I couldn't afford to pay them, shouldn't have animals in the first place.  We all feed the heck out of these insurance companies.

I just insured one a couple of months ago. I went back and forth too but the fact is I wouldn't be able to replace her if something were to happen. I'm not even sure what I have her insured for would replace her right now but for me it is peace of mind. We could afford vet bills if needed but I went ahead and added major medical because, for this horse, I would go the full length to save/fix her if something happened. I have another up and coming that I may add on as well. This is my first time insuring any horses. These horses are also how I make part of my living.

I dont insure most of my horses, but I did insure the yearling I purchased at Ruby Buckle and the 4YO I recently purchased as well. and I will insure my other yearling when he goes off to the colt starter. But otherwise, that'll be it. Its great for the rare tragic accident and thats what I would use it for, not as a means to do a bunch of vet work.
