I have had horses pretty much my whole life.  I feel that I have a pretty good grasp on most concepts relating to horses.  One thing that I have never taken much time to look in to was the functionality of the different types of bits.  I have always had trusty, finished horses that could be ridden in anything, so it has never been an issue, until now.  I had to retire my old mare recently and have a green horse that I just got back from being with the trainer.  She has been riding him in a dog bone jr. cowhorse.  I don't like the way he feels with that bit on when I'm riding him.  I'd like to find another bit that works better for both he and I.  I want to do some research on the different mouth pieces, shanks, etc. to try to decide what would be best.  What have you found to be the best resources to learn more about the actual functionality of each of the differnt type? Thanks!

If you have Facebook - there is a group called "horses:proper bitting and bitting techniques"   There is a LOT of information on there about bit mechanics and different types of bits, especially in the files. Word to the wise - just lurk around and learn. You have to have very thick skin if you admit to being a barrel racer and attempt to defend most barrel horse bits. The group is good about answering questions - but have no tolerance for someone trying to defend what they think is an abusive bit. All gag bits (no matter how small the amount of gag) fall in that catagory. So they are going to tell you the jr cowhorse is crap. And whatever you do - DO NOT SAY THAT IT IS THE HANDS THAT MAKE A BIT HARSH - NOT THE BIT.  Unless you want to see pictures of half naked men.....unless you want to - then go ahead. It's one of the things they do when someone says "the phrase".

You can also look up bit makers like dave elliot and troy flaharty on facebook. Occasionally they post videos about how their bits are supposed to work. You can pick info up there too.

This is excellent information! I'll start there.  Thank you!
