Today is
Debating switching to a grain free diet. I’ve seen and ready so many positive things about feeding only alfalfa pellets or alfalfa/Timothy mix pellets. What’s everyone’s opinion on this diet for your barrel horses, performance horses. It seems we’re feeding a ton of what’s supposed to be amazing grain and not loving the results do you add supplements etc
Horses need long stem forage. Pellets are not long stem. If you wanted to add them instead of grain but also had hay, that's a great idea. You could also use cubes if you didn't want the hay. Cubes are long stem.
I switched from grain or commercial products to Alfalfa Pellets and all the grass hay they want a few years ago. It seems to be working great for my horses. I use to feed alfalfa and grass hay but then so many farmers were changing the afalfa fields to Round-up ready Alfalfa I changed to pellets. I changed to pellets basically because there is no waste , less space and easy to handle. Fortuately, there is a hay producer not far that has non GMO fields and puts up pellets. I do boost the protein and Omegas with Hemp Hearts.
I feed pellets to get my diet balancer into my picky horses. I use high point by horsetech. I have been doing this for a couple years now and its been working great! for my harder keeper i add some flaxseed oil, super easy and cost effective!
I feed the best quality free choice orchard grass I can get my hands on along with a flake or two of alfalfa. A small scoop of a timothy hay pellets along with Cal Trace minerals and salt. My crew looks awesome, have good feet, healthy immune systems and shine! No reason for grain imo if you feed good hay and minerals
Hay will retain minerals but not the vitamins.
