Anyone here done a check surgery to cut the check ligament? I have a weanling with a pretty clubby foot. Vet has brought up doing the check surgery, but also says we could wait and see how her feet change with more rasping of the heel biweekly. Vet has said there are no downsides to going ahead with getting her check done, so I'm leaning that direction. Any stories of having this done? How was the horse later in life for competition? Anyone not have this done with a pretty good club foot? Wondering how horses have turned out either way. Thank you!

i had this done 22 years ago on a 4 month old filly. shes never had an unsound day in her life. shes still standing in my barn at 22 years old. she won 2 saddles and a lot of money in her career. there wasnt much after care. every time i got a new shoer in, they would pick her foot up and tell me she had a bowed tendon because they could feel the scar tissue from the surgery.

I had this done on the best turn back horse we ever had. We did this when he was about six months old. No issues with him at all. Sound to a ripe old age.

Yes, I had one done in June. He was a yearling. You really want to get them as soon as you can. In his case, the surgery went well, but there’s a tiny lump at the incision site. My vet told me it’s because we waited a bit too long and it’s simply cosmetic. I’ve owned a horse that was club footed and I would not own another one. (So many lameness issues and he retired at 19. Lame) In that case, the previous owner did not do the surgery and they really should have. I was told that this is a very common surgery. In my yearling's case, post surgery, we did biweekly trimming and he wore a toe extension. He's sound and looks/moves fantastic. I recommend it for sure.

Thank you guys so much for the replies! This makes me feel much more confident to go ahead with the surgery now. I appreciate you guys taking the time to respond.

I'd do it sooner rather than later - my gelding, they waited and his feet never corrected as much as they would have if they had done it on time.
