| Never been a big mare fan but ended up buying a 2 yr old cow/run filly. She is very ill mannered, almost a mean streak! does not like to be touched! Any suplemnts other than Regumate that helps and more affordable? Anyone have a mare that is super ill.... do you feel it hinders the ability to make a good horse/performer? |

| It's probably best you find out what makes her behave the way she does first. If she just wasn't handled properly as a baby and she is a spoiled brat, no supplements needed, just some reality check/ respect training. If she is a witch because of her ovaries , heat cycles etc, then you need to quite possibly go the regumate route. My mare is on it 365 days a year but her heats are super painful. Other than that , she is a hard working 1D mare. If it's ulcer related, need to address those. |

| My daughter ran a hateful mare and she was 1D against some of the best. I have a friend with 2 of the nastiest mares ever on the ground and they are 1D. They seem to take the attitude and put it in their runs. The trick is learning to work with them not against them. |

| thank you for the info.... question.... if it is ovaries, heat cycle, the moods, im assuming would come and go? but if there is no cycle and she is just that way all of the time, would you assume ulcers first? I do know that she was handled wrong before I got her, so that is a good possiblity! |

| My daughter's mare was rushed before we got her and also had ulcers. We treated the ulcers and spent a lot of time doing dry work on her. Her attitude improved but never completely went away. She was a blast to ride even with the tude. |

Maybe she just don’t get along with other cattle that you have

Location: Da Booshes | I agree with checking for repro system issues, ulcers and over or mishandling. But out of curiosity, since I am into cow horse bloodlines, how is she bred?

| I would treat for ulcers. Omeprazole and Succeed. Covers both fore and hindgut ulcers. Ulcer horses will not want to be touched. |

| It could be as simple as this ... if she was the bottom of the pecking order and got nipped, kicked or shoved around then she may be flinch happy and is protecting herself. Lots of brushings, rhythemic patting including the breast bone where cinch goes with a stern jerk on the halter to improve her manners when needed. When you turn out a new horse with the bunch the lowest horse will turn into a bully ... I handle the new horse by penning all the others and letting it find the perimeter fenceline and then turn out one at a time to go meet the new comer .. |

Location: Broxton, Ga | I would probably just take her to the a good equine vet and let them check her out....from female stuff to ulcers.... And yes I have several mares ........ill and still good performers. |

Location: MS | My mare was getting stuck in heat and had huge follicles. She was miserable. She stays on regumate now and is back to being sweet and cooperative. One bottle of Regumate ($150 from Chewy) lasted me about 4 months. I'd have an ultrasound done to rule this out. |

Location: On My Horse! | I agree with the other posters. Take her to the vet and have a full evaluation done on her. (Lameness, Internal, Repro) To be this mean, kind of sounds pain related to me. Was she like this with her previous owners? You can't go wrong with a good mare. |
