I have used both the IV and oral paste.  Since I have to give Lasix, Guanabenz   was hard to get in the vein when it was time to give the Guanabenz.  So swithched to the oral paste and it works just as well for my mare.

I meant to give the suspended solution orally like ACE, but yes i did do that yesterday and let her stand saddled and came back in a couple of hours to ride and she was much better.

this filly was abused and starved and she is scared of her own mane flowing n wind (side eye)

so was looking for an option to give her for a few rides just to get her to relax and realizes life doesnt suck.

thats why i didnt want to give her a shot - just oral

but anywho yep just some under tongue worked

I have and many friends have.  I prefer the paste.  Super easy to give and you don't have to poke them.

Where did you get the paste?  All I've found was the IV.

Yes, we do IV - but I have had a horse it made crazy - it was like a reverse effect. We had to use Chlorpromazine. I would say if you have not used it to try it at home and see how your horse is first.

I know my vet has paste, its 20mg so you don't have to give but 1/2-3/4 cc of it a hour out

Vet told me IV 45 minutes out. IM 90 minutes out. I'd assume the oral would be similar to IM. I've found it to be effective at calming but with my mare it's a small window of time. It seems to work between 75 and 150 minutes. If a race is running slow, the guanabenz may wear off before we run. She's worse on those days when she's coming off as we warm up.

There are many different strengths of Guanabenz, from 8mg al the way up to 20mg. Please double check the strength you're using before you give it.

.5 cc IV 30 min out.  every time on my fractious high strung mare :)  wont run without it.  it slows her brain down just enough.
