Due to life, I've been out of horses personally for almost 10 years..  granted, I've ridden some here and there and stayed up with a lot of things but I'm curious...does anyone haul with gas trucks???  My husband saying we may have to do that bc of diesel always being higher than gas and other higher associated costs but I've never in life considered a gas truck.  We would not have anything larger than a 3 horse with weekender gooseneck....probably much smaller.  With that said, what would be my best bet (ford, dodge, Chevy) on gas mileage? I can't begin even asking this but if it means the difference in getting back in or not, I'm game.

It's doable. I know several people who have gone back to gas trucks because of the price of diesel. My problem with a gas burner in Louisiana was that every one we owned ran hot in the summer. Maybe that's not a problem with the new trucks.

I haul a four horse steel bumper pull.  I've towed it with both gas and diesel trucks.  I hate using the gas truck.  It overheats on me and I also do cannot have exhaust brakes on it like I do the diesel.  I will only use the gas truck for very short hauls in town with no grades.  That is my personal experience for what it is worth.

Diesel prices per gallon might be SLIGHTLY higher ( In CA here its the same as premium gas). But you get way better MPG than you do with gas, SO it really evens out. If you " Take care" of a diesel it will last you 3-4-500,000 miles. Gas engines give up the ghost way quicker. Usually. Diesels also hold their value better to when its time you want another.

I have an older truck...2005 Chevy dually with the 8.1. They don't make it anymore but that is a great engine (in case you find an older truck to buy). It hauls my 3h w/8' short wall without issue. Gas mileage is horrible tho.

A 2015 or new Chevy w/a 6.0 (has the lower gear ratio rear) tows really well also. I *can* tow my set up with that truck but I wouldn't reccommend doing that long term. Works in a pinch.

Chevy now has a 6.6 gas engine. I don't know all the details but its prob worth checking out.

I own a 2015 Chevy 2500 and haul a 3 horse gooseneck.   It is a gas truck.  I normally only haul one or two horses but this past fall, my daughter hauled 3-4 horses in Montana and Wy up to 6-8 hours with no issues.  It hauled her horse to Wy with no issues also (a 23 hour drive).  I have to admitt prior to that I was hauling with a 1994 Chevy dually that got us through the HS rodeo years but I am treating this truck like the precious item it is to me.  It is well maintianed and has low milege for a 2015.

I have a 2003 Ford F-250 powerstroke, 6.0. All stock, has been super reliable hauling our 4 horse trailer along with round bales of hay.
