My horse got an upper Suspensory ligament injury in the hind. Followed vets advice and did 3 weeks of hand walking. Well at the end of those three weeks, she is very over it. Ended up running around the whole arena going crazy, texted vet and was advised to try letting her graze so she will calm down. Her being able to be outside is the most important to me, but of course I still want her to heal soon so we can work our way back to running. Wondering if anyone here has any special tips or tricks. I know a vet will always need to be involved, and they are, but I still want to know others experiences with this. Seems like most have dealt with lower suspensory of upper by the hock. Been cold hosing and putting on poultice on everyday. Was going to send her to a rehab facility but now I'm not able to. Has anyone used total tendon repair or osteon by platinum performance? Also, when she was ultrasounded she just had swelling, no tears.

I rehab 2-3 suspensorys per year, usually high suspensory on  hind legs.

you need a vet with a good ultrasound machine, that is good at reading ultrasounds. He needs to be able to measure the lesion so you can cl progress every 4-6 weeks. Just saying "theres a strain/injury" is not enough.

Regenerative meds into the lesion are necessary unless ot is truly , just a strain, that maybe has some fluid but still has good fiber alignment.

Stall rest, usually 3-4 months, with no more than hand walking is necessary. No excercise until you have some fiber formation.

daily or at least 3 x per week MagnaWave, acuscope or laser therapy to help circulation. There is no blood circulation in tendon/ligaments, so you need to stimulate blood flow around it. The body's healing process slows down drastically around 8 weeks, so more therapy is needed, especially then.

Regular U/S to gauge progress is critical. If you don't see consistent progress (about 10%) every 6 weeks, they are moving too much or you're not doing enough therapy.

supportive shoeing, like a heel extension will help.

Liana -- is PRP an option for this type of injury?  Just asking since I have used it with extremely great results on my horse for a stifle issue and myself for SI and QL issues.

Yes, I usually use PRP. Can also use Renovo if you want to spend the money. You definitely need something injected into the lesion to restart healing.

I used the total tendon repair about a year and a half ago for a bowed tendon. Using it again currently for another bowed tendon. I own a magna wave machine, so I do that every other day, as well as red light therapy and hand walking as well as no bow wraps daily.

So I was not sure what was wrong.  The vet did not find what was wrong so.  I taped her up with horse tape on her hind suspensory from bottom to top.  There was a ytube video.  This mare is hipper and I could not keep her calm.  She healed quit well but I had her taped for months.  I changed the tape periodically and sometimes wrapped with polo wrap over it at the beginning .
