Old old member here. Probably haven't logged on in 10 years yikes! I suddenly have started grabbing my horse going to the 1st and can't seem to break the habit. The more I do it, the worse our 1st is or he goes up the wall and doesn't turn at all. This of course is a vicious cycle that gets in my head because even though I know if I leave him alone he'll turn, I'm not trusting and picking up the inside rein and he absolutley hates hates hates that.
What can I do? Any tricks? Try 1 handing him to the first? Lordy thats terrifying for me, lol we all have control issues!
Head in with your left hand, one handed, on the reins and switch at the rate point or a stride past. It will help keep your mind on your hands.
I've turned in to the biggest chicken headed to the first barrel especially anything that goes right barrel first so I feel this! And Geronobean , I'mma have to try this!!
Mental imagery can help here. Picture all of the things you need to do going into and during your first barrel, in your head. Imagine seeing yourself do all of the things you know you need to do and when you need to do them and practice imagining this where you don't grab a hold of your horse. Do this several times, especially before your run.
