I am in need of some ideas for 5 math and 5 language file folder games for one of my classes.  I have two ideas for math.  One is to make cows with different amount of white spots on them up to ten and put velcro on the back and have the kids match the number of spots to the number on the folder.  Second almost the same but I will be making pocketed treasure chests attached to the folder (again 10) and will make 'jewels' and the kids will need to put the correct amount of jewels in the correct numbered treasure chest.  These have to be VERY simple for Preschool aged children.  Something that doesn't take alot of time and can be easily done in the file folder.(and Im really not to crafty and I have to make these all by hand)  Was thinking of doing some type of match game to but my mind is drawing a blank.  So I still need 5 language ideas and 3 math ideas.  Any suggestions?

I don't have any ideas for you, but I would go to the PBS website and they have some interesting stuff for teachers.  I am an education major and I have gotten some good ideas from that website.  You can specify what grade you need information about and what subject area as well.

I teach 9th-12th graders, but I just ask my daughter if she could remember any games from Kindergarten, because she had a great teacher (back then) that had all kinds of games.  I don't know if this is one that you would like, but its good to put tucked away, just in case.

She told me about a game they played called "Around the World" Math.  I hope that I can explain this well enough for you to understand.  The students are in 3 rows(or so) back, 5 students(or so) in each row, the teacher starts in the back of the room (left side), the back 2 students that are sitting by each other are ask to stand, the teacher holds up a flash card like 2+1, the first student that answers will advance and go between the 3rd students desk and stands with the student, then the teacher holds up another flash card 3+1 or 1+1, the first student who answers, advances and the one who doesn't advance sits at that students desk.....when the student who goes around the world consistantly with out having to sit, wins, gets "something" ~candy, some reward! Let me know if this is confusing and I will send you and email w/ an actual drawing!

Language games:

Color match - Match dog bowls to bones using the eight basic colors

Food Match

Clothing Match

Animal Match

Locations Match - on, off, under, over, beside, behind, in front of, etc.

Math games:

Shape Matching

Number Matching

Maybe a 10 dogs numbered 1-10 and the child places the corresponding number of dots (spots) on each dog.

Maybe something with simple fractions like whole, half, thirds using pizzas or cookies.

I can't think of anything else right now.  If you're close to a teacher supply store, go check out the file folder game books for ideas or do an online search.

I taught first grade some of the more basic file folder games I used for Language was matching upper and lower case letters, putting the alphabet in order, sorting stick letters and ball letters, sorting upper case and lower case letters.  Stick letters would go on one side of the folder and ball letters on the other side and so forth.

For math I would stick to the numbers 1-10.  Match the number up with an object.  The number 1 matches up with a pic of 1 frog.  I had one that had logs on it with numbers under each log.  They had to place a corresponding number of frogs on the log.  Have them match shapes-- small triangles to large triangles.  Have them match/place a shape to the outline of the shape.  If you have die cuts available using sandpaper cut out numbers and have them say the number and run their fingers over the number.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head without digging through my old files-- I teach 6th grade now.

How about a sequence game where one square has 1,2,3... and they have to velcro the number 4 on it or you could have 8,7,6, and they would have to put 5 on it.  Or you could have a grid with 1-100 on it with certain numbers missing....and they would have to put the right numbers in the missing spots.

I have a math game that is also in the basic skills. Make house for each child make cards with their phone number let them match their house with their phone number. You can reverse this with the number and the name. I use this with my sp. ed kids to teach them their address name and phone number.
