Hi all...just some quick questions..Ive never hauled a foal less than 2 weeks old, so thought Id better ask....My mare is slightly infected (no temp, eating & drinking very well, but has yellow discharge) The local vet is busy and cant get to me, and was pretty grumpy because I dont have my stocks up yet (the barn is less than a month old) So Ive decided to haul my mare down to my GOOD vet, about 1 hr away...Id planned on putting the mare in the front slant and letting the colt ride loose ....or am I better off having them both out of the divider, with the mare just tied in?

We haul several mares a year from Texas to Oklahoma and New Mexico to different stud farms.  We always leave the slants open so the colt can get right next to "mamma".  We tie the mares.  We have never tried dividing them, so I don't know how that would work.

I would tie the mare but leave the dividors opened.  I hauled my mare to be bred 1 hr and 15 minutes with a foal at her side. The best way for the foal to learn to haul is besides it's mama!!

I always hauled mine in an open trailer (no dividers) with the mare tied, and foal loose, they have always done great!  Used to haul on foal heat, so the foals were itty, bitty!  Usually went about one hour away, but one time went 4 1/2 hours away.
