We had what I called the creeping crud go thru most of our horses in January - pretty much just the younger ones that have never been out and exposed to germs!  They all had snotty noses and coughs for 2 to 3 weeks. But - one five year old has continually had a slight cough - mostly when he is eating or if he is penned up when you turn him out. He seems to feel great otherwise- rides nice and nothing out of the ordinary.  It is a little worse this week because he was feeling good enough that I hauled him with us to a high school rodeo last weekend  - only to have him end up standing in a downpour part of the night.  Any good remedies?  I think there is a product called cough calm - anyone have any experience with it?

I have a friend whose horse will cough a little when warming up and she gives him mustard. Not sure how much, but she swears by it. Can't imagine the horse liking it, but you never know.

I was going through this "not snotty nose, only the cough" with my 4 yr. old.Had her scoped & she was fine.I got haemastop from Hilton Herbs. She has stopped coughing. It's a liquid so you can put it in the grain or straight in the mouth.I prefere to give it to her orally 1 hour before I ride her.I tried the tri hist & she refused to touch her grain & it won't mix with water so you can squirt it in her mouth.I got the haemastop through  www.chamisaridge.com

Could be he's going to need the help of some antibiotics to kick it completely.

I've used mustard on a heevy horse or one who seemed to have a little something caught in their throat.  Never give them a chance to see if they liked it or not!!!  Just shot whole bottle down their throats and seemed to do the trick in those type of cases.

Wow, Mustard!  Could you mix it with Whiskey have a new drink?

How about Alovera Juice in the water.  It has been working on mine with Alergies.

I use the generic Robitussin - seems to work when they just have a cough and no runny nose.

I guess I never thought about it being allergies since he had the cold...??? Regarding antibiotics, when they first got sick everyone was saying it was best to let it take its course - that kind of like some of the people flu - antibiotics wouldn't really help it.  (Viral?)  Maybe I better try the Robitusin and then if that doesn't do it I will look into some of these  herb websites - had several pms on those.

Finish Line's Cough Remedy works great. It's an all natural syrup, no drugs, just put the recommended dosage in a syringe and administer like paste wormer. Really clears out the nasal passages too, right before a run!
