Ok need advice. I have an 11 year old gelding that has been patterned for 3 years but not hauled a lot in those 3 years. He was used as a barrel lesson and clinic horse. He was sold to me as fit and ready to compete (was told by his original owner the true story) which I guess he is ready to haul just needs to be seasoned. Not a big deal to me. BUT am having a BIG problem! He does a pretty good pattern (it is there just rusty and a new rider) but he does not know how to RUN off the line! He will power home off the third but even then I can feel him bunched a bit. How can I teach him to stretch out and be comfortable at speed?

I was thinking of hauling him to a training track and teaching him to run there over several weeks/months? Think I am on the right track? 43

It almost sounds like he is not sure how to run to me. I assume that he is pretty solid and broke with a good whoa and control since he was a lesson and clinic horse.First have him checked for any soreness or medical reason why he might not want to open up and run. If he is not sore and sound if you have a track near by I would try breezing him on it or if no track is available try him just running him in a pasture. You might even try running him on the track or pasture with another horse so he knows that it is ok to run when asked. Then work with just you guys. This is JMO and I hope it helps. Good Luck.

That was exactly my thought and we do have several thoroughbred training tracks around here I can use.

I think he was just pulled up so many times because there is a hesitation in him when he picks up speed.  Like he is waiting and any second he will be checked to slow down.
