Well, we went to the vet yesterday afternoon, and ended up getting my 10yr old geldings hocks injected, my  vet thought he was probably sore there for a while   I wish they could just tell you what hurts!  I concentrated on his back last year, and figured with the winter off, he would be good as new,,,  Man, I hate myself for being pretty hard on him last year, and to find out the poor boy was sore, in more than one place,,,UGH!    Anyway, he injected him with Adequan (sp?) so, I am giving him a week off for good measure, any suggestions to ease him back into working off his butt again,,,I won't drill him, I will take it easy onhim.

Thanks everyone!

I would probably have a chiro look at him and see if he's out in the back.  Sometimes one thing leads to another.  If he were sore in his hocks he may have compensated elsewhere causing him to be out.  That's what I would do, somebody else might do something different.  Good Luck!

I had adjusted him a ton last year, and figured he would be good as new starting off this year, but since he came up sore again, I knew it had to be something else, so that is why I told him to the vet.  So he has been adjusted again, and now his hocks injected, he is probably thinking,,,it's about time mother!  I hope this takes care of it, I don't know if anyone remembers my post awhile back, about being depressed to the point my horses felt like a chore to me,,,well, since then, I figured out it stems to this horse not being totally "right" since I started back on him, this horse put the fun back into riding for me, and when that fun was taken away, I fell into a depression, I will snap out of it but I am hoping to have him back and 100%.

Thanks

An adjustment will also help you injections last longer.  My mare that has spurs on her hocks only has to be injected every 9 months or so - thanks to adjustments, magnets, and accupuncture.

Hey there girl,

I'm kind of surprised your vet only did the Adequan but I think your old boy should be fine.  My bay that I didn't take to Tulsa, after I had him injected, he came back hard and was running great a week after his injection.  Of course I had him on that great Fluid Action too!  He will be fine.  You take good care of your horses and this old boy just needed some maintenance.

You should start him on joint maintenance like Adequan or Legend or both to keep his injections lasting longer.

Ra, I feed Fluid Action too, I love it! It has worked for me for the last 6 years, until this, but he is 10, so I figure that he is worth it!!!!
Did you give your horse more than a few days off, I was thinking a week off.
I will definately keep the injectings going, if they help.
And the chiro!32 32

I only gave him 3 or 4 days off, then I started him up again.  His hocks were pretty bad due to the fact that he grew so fast when he was younger.  My vet is awesome and he knows his stuff (was strictly a track vet for 30 years) and has an awesome facility now.  Anyway, my point is, don't jump the gun.  Some horses are injected and never need it again.  Just ride him like ya stole him girl!  I really don't think I would give up on your fluid action (a lot of vets recommend it) and I really don't think I would jump all over the adequan/legend shots until you give this some time and see what you are dealing with.

I was gonna wait to see what happens with him, I thought if I noticed a difference then I will keep up on them as needed, since I am horse poor.

After you ride him, you will be able to tell the difference....  you will also be able to tell if he is needing it again...  If we ever make it to another barrel race in the same area remind me to show you that little test I was telling you about.

Just wondering,,,,,,does anyone stall their horses after injections, or just leave them in their normal setting?  My horse is the king of the herd, so no one runs him, I noticed he just stood around last night and this morning, and I think it's like 70 degrees now, so I bet he is sunning himself!

I wouldn't stall him but I would keep him in a smaller pen to himself.  JMO

Congrats on finding out the problem, I have never injected a horse, so can't be much help. Sounds like RnS has some good ideas.

I know, I have never had a horse injected either so this is a new experience for me and my horse, I just hope it brings him back to what he was,,,,I know I will feel better.  If that doesn't work it's on the the next thing to eliminate.
