Location: california | I saw this on the Kappy post, but I wonder what everyone else does. After your run, do you 1- stop straight at the gate or 2- stop on an easy circle or 3- stop in a smaller circle.
I try to stop my horse easy at the gate, straight, so that by the time he is near the gate, he is sliding from a slow lope. However, when it is a short pen, I have always stopped harder on a straight away. I have seen girls do all three, or kind of a mix, like stop hard in the corner of the arena. |

Location: Mississippi | My pro horse slides like a reining horse the moment she hits the alley way without you even touching her mouth. Most of the horses I train are very ratey and slide to a stop like that when they get back to the alley and know their job is done. |

Location: Minnesota | I guess I do the Sliding Stop (only when my horse takes the bit at the end) and I do a big circle, accept recently we've been hauling to a arena that gives you about 10 feet from the timer, so I usually end up stopping or doing a tiny circle........ |

No I forgot to tell her about that one!!! She's going to love it. Wait, I think I have heard that one. Does it go something like "She looks so young but she smells so old..."? |

Location: LouLouVille, OK | What I do depends on how much room I have to do it, if the timer allows me enough room to stop straight, then I do, if I am having to run almost to the gate to stop the timer, I do a circle. I don't like to cram my horse to a stop anymore than I have to, but mine throttle down when I am coming out, so if I have my way, it's open gate for me!! |

I personally think she's just trying to run off all those amorous suitors she was talking about in one of the "men" posts..... |

Location: where buffalo run across the football field | It depends where I am. If I'm at the fairgrounds I push her to the wall and she slides but if I'm at the Saddle Club I do a circle. It really depends on what kind of mood she's in and the size of the arena. |

Location: Out of the closet! | It depends on the arena, but I try and let my horse stop as naturaly, on his own as possible.. The less wear and tear on his legs, the better.. He doesnt mind stopping at all though, actually, he cant wait!!! |

Location: Michigan | It took me two years to get mine to not plant her right front foot, pivot and stop on that foot. I call her my little GM wannabe cuz she used to be as union minded as you can get. Not one foot over the line would she go, get to the timers and WHAM you better be grabbing that horn ready to spin. I have no idea who or why she was taught that, but I can still even now see her checking out the timers and knowing where they are whether they are inside or out, marked with cones or not, she knows. I have been methodically working at both mentally and physically pushing her past those timers. I have her now where if the gate is open, she rates way down but will canter through and then stop, or if the gate is shut I force her to the left and make her make a circle. It has been hard, but that bone jarring one footed pivoting stop was gonna get one of us hurt. I wonder why anyone would teach a horse to stop that way. Especially one who is smart enough to know when and where the line is everytime. |

Or unless Dan sees a pretty girl way over there, he just keeps on going right over to her! Actually, I got ol'Yella trained to run right up to the pretty ones.. I just sit up there and act like "hes outa control".. Then when he finally stops, I say, its a good thing you where here, then "grin a little bit", and go from there !!! LOL

Location: Nebraska | I like to let mine slow down as natural as possible. Around here I run in a small arena pretty often where my mare doesn't have enough room to slow herself down so we end up making a fast straight stop at the gate. I don't like the extra strain of making another turn at the end of the arena, but I think its just a matter of opinion. Of course each horse is different. I've seen plenty that will crash a gate unless they are turned to one side or the other. |
