I work at teh DA's in our county, basically I collect the bad checks for local merchants. Lots of fun but anyhow, I've been holding onto a check for a while now because I know the couple who wrote it and went to high school with them and really thought they'de pay. Needless to say it didn't happen. So I finally had to file on them. Well the other day at my second job I see her, I pulled her aside (as in where no one could here or see what we were talking about) and told her if she could get her hubby to come down and sign some papers and pay the restitiution I could keep him from getting arested. I WAS TRYING TO BE NICE!! BAD MOVE, he called up where I work part time and chewed my manager out saying thats invasion of privacy (hate to break it to him but warrants are public record and on the internet) I know both of em and never thought he'd react like that. For god sake I was trying to keep him from getting arrested. Anyhow, he never came in a paid, and still the warrant remained till he got pulled over last night and they hauled his butt in! The very thing I was trying to be nice and prevent. SO this morning the resident dits legal rep calls and wants me to know he had no idea and blah blah and what can we do to prevent him from goin to jail. Of course I tell her the same thing I told his wife the other day and got my other boss' butt ate for. It never pays to try to help people out in these situations, I guess.

You were just trying to be nice...don't beat yourself up over it.  People tend to get upset when they are put in an embarrasing situation, even if it was because of their own doing.  You sound like a very caring person and that's a good thing!

Oh I am not beat up over it I was more ticked that he would blow up after I was trying to be nice. I bet anything his wife didn't know about the checks and went home and ate his rear and he needed someone to blame. None of the notices I sent ever came back so I am sure they got them.

Well you can bet he will be more careful in the future.  How some people think stuff like that won't catch up with them is beyond me.

I have found, in my old age, that "friends" usually get me in much more trouble than strangers ever have....and it's usually because I'm trying to help.  You have a good heart and someone up there knows you were trying to help!! That has to be your consolation in these kinds of situations...at least you did all YOU could do to prevent that from happening.  You can't help it if he didn't heed your advice.

You are exactly right - you just cannot help some of these people!  We had a "friend" ride with my husband to a roping several hundred miles and when they got back he absolutely INSISTED that he give my husband a check for part of the diesel... SO he writes out a check for TEN DOLLARS!!!  Hubby laughed and threw it on his dresser. Well, I wasn't going to bother to go to the bank and deposit ten dollars, so one day when I am at my local small town grocery store, I cash the check... of course about a week later, my grocer catches me when I am in there to tell me the ten dollar check BOUNCED!!!!  So, I then had to pay like $25 in fees to the grocery store over the stupid deal.  I finally just threw the check away, figuring it had cost me enough. I have seen these people many times since then and they never mention the check.  I guess either they are so horrible at keeping their books, they have no clue or they just don't care.

Alley--I would have done the same thing--I think it goes right along with your saying about chili peppers!!! It seems like when you are trying to help some people it just comes back and bites you in the btt!

I firmly believe the world would be a better place if we followed the advise of that comic (forget which one) about Stupid People being required to wear signs--that way you just wouldn't bother and waste your time.

Yeah it's aggrevating cuz the sob stays here in my "area" (so I get to see and hear it first hand) instead of moving back to the panhandle where he's from!!! And he just bought land (2 acres) approx 5-10 miles from my house (100 acres ha!)  Oh but let me clear this up his new girl just bought land and a new truck .....I have thanked her (and shook her hand!) for taking him from me!!

Don't you wish you could tack on a "stupid" fee for some of these people.

I probably shouldn't talk since I did have some checks get turned over after my paycheck didn't get depostied into the right account.  They put it in my old account back home.  I called all the people and explained what happened and most were very nice about it but one guy was a real jerk.  Not only did I call him but the payroll manager from work called him and he was a jerk to her about it.  Finally the works bank called and said that it was their fault and they'd pay the fines.  I can understand if it was my fault but it wasn't.  Then again I'm sure he's heard those stories before as well but after both work and the bank call wouldn't you tend to start believing it a little bit.??

Actually they both do it. I think Bill Engvall "invented it" and Jeff Foxworthy just expanded on it. I have heard them both do it and they're both darn funny too!

You did the honest thing. As a general rule people do not run short on purpose and appreciate the opportunity to get it paid.

Some people (like me) are forgetful and appreciate a reminder.

I'm sorry they didn't just simply get it paid.
