What are your opinions on he ability of a granddaughter of a prominent stallion on both sides of the pedigree? Say Frenchmans Guy or Dash Ta Fame. When looking for a futurity horse, is it worth the money to spend the thousands of extra on a fg or dtf son or daughter versus a cheaper grandget?

here's my opinion. I think it is very true, that your odds are better if you can get a direct son or daughter of a prominent stallion. The FGs, DTFs, and FWFs are popular for a reason- people pay those prices for a reason.

Now- I think you can find just as good prospects that are grand get of these horses. I think each generation is supposed to improve on the last. But I think it becomes a game of chance and predictions- for example. Dash Ta Fame is the #1 sire of barrel horses, and he's the only Dash Ta Fame there is. Now, he has a TON of sons standing at stud. Which one of those sons is going to come the closest, or even exceed, DTF as a sire? We don't know yet! So it's more of a gamble at times whether you are going to find the one that hits it big as a sire, or not.

I think FWOTR and Chasin firewater are the two big sons of Fire Water flit to watch out for. Likewise, their prices aren't really cheap anymore either!

I think Firewater Ta Fame and Eddie Stinson off the top of my head are going to be DTF's top barrel producing sons.

To answer your question better maybe…if you want to have a leg up in the futurity world- see what horses are winning. There's quite a few grand get of the big names that are winning the big futurities. And when these sons of the big names start producing winners, like Chasin Firewater, FWTOR, Firewater Ta Fame have been doing- their babies are no longer "grand get of so and so" but they are now "own son of FWOTR!"…. likewise.. even these grand get babies are no longer cheap!

Couldn`t have said it better my self. some of the sires that are own sons might be future sires as long as they themselves are proven. So why not? You might have an own son or daughter of So and SO in the future!

I want to add that when looking at breeding to a son of a big name or buying one of their offspring, take into consideration what that particular stallion did, what he's produced so far, and his dam's performance and produce record. It seems like there are so many sons of big name horses that people kept intact thinking they would be the next big thing. A lot of these horses never did anything. Others are out of mediocre mares, making the bottom side of the pedigree very weak. You'll have a better chance of getting a performer if the sire performed and produced, and his dam did, too. All DTF, FG, FWF, etc. sons are not created equal.

Excellent post, with very valid points! I've seen several DTF studs, some Iwwould cut off my right arm to breed to, others I wouldn't breed a donkey too lol

I agree with the above, do your research on what the stallion has done himself but more important (I think) what are his babies out there accomplishing? I also agree with the person who said there are some DTF studs they wouldn't breed a donkey to, lol I have seen some sons of him that are just poor poor examples of what a stallion should be

Bump!

Thanks for all the replies so far, they've been really helpful. I've been looking at getting a foal next year from a breeder that has some really nice horses. Lots of daughter of the top barrel sire, dash ta fame, frenchmans guy, dash for perks, bully bullion, most are proven producers or performers or both. And the main stallion they have is young, but has 1 futurity horse that's making it big out of his first crop. Still trying to decide what I want to spend, they have a few mares bred to frenchmans guy for next year too. Thanks again.
