What have you had luck with on puppies?  He hasn't been MDR1 tested.

Anyone have any luck with any of the heartworm/flea combo's?  Any to stay away from?

We have an appt Monday, thought I'd get some feed back.

My mini aussie has Heartguard. that's what the vet suggested earlier this year when I took him in on a horse visit that turned into 2 horses and a dog. That bill sucked! LOL.

The heartworm medicine with flea preventitive in it cost 4 times as much as  the regular heartworm medicine alone. I usually just get the heartworm medicine and keep my dogs bathed weekly to prevent and check for any fleas. I also use a discount vet that comes to tractor supply once a month, they do the shots and you can get heartworm pills etc without the additional office fees etc...It is always the same vet so he keeps a record of who uses him. He has me check for heartworms every two years. The officed vet near my home will not let me have the pills without checking for heartworms each year and naturally charging me $70 for just walking in the door!!! I understand they need to make a living but but there is no reason to charge so dang much!

I have an Auggie so I was worried about ivermectin too. My vet had a shot that lasts six months so we went with that. I love that I don't have to remember a monthly tablet!

You will be fine going with any of the heartworm meds- Heartgard, Sentinel, Interceptor.  I really like Sentinel and it has some extra added flea protection (it doesnt kill adult fleas but will basically make adult fleas sterile and unable to reproduce--almost like flea birth control).

The macrocyclic lactone (ivermectin) dose in heartworm meds such as the ones I listed above is so low that you dont have to worry about the MDR1 status---your pup will be just fine.  It's when you get into higher doses of ivermectin--like when people use horse wormers to worm their dogs.  That is when you start seeing reactions and need to be a lot more mindful of the dogs MDR1 status.

Hope this helps!

I'd check with your vet and ask them about Iverheart Max (it prevents heartworm and treats tapeworms as well).
