Location: Illinois | Bibliafarm - 2013-11-16 10:23 PM yes doesnt look like i envisioned.. not skinny by no means. still up the grain a bit though.. i dont think its enough to provide the proper nutrients.. 4 lbs daily.
a good workout tummy lifts as sg said and work over his back and add some good supplements as above mentioned and i think he will improve his look. has a weak back and stomach .. kind of upside down in the gut area ..pretty horse.
We have a running joke that since she couldn't buy my horse from me she had to go find his twin lol. He's a cool dude, I look forward to getting to see them grow together :) |

Location: Texas | He is thin, IMO. Senior feed is OK, but when you look at the feed tag, you will see that some is much higher in fiber than others, which equals fewer calories. I don't know what is available in your area but yes, I would feed him more. You can also add a high fat supplement. Most of the bigger feed companies make one, such as ADM or Purina. |

Location: NC | Feeding 4lbs of a grain that most likely requires a daily minimum of at least 6-8lbs just to get the minimum amount of the analysis, isn't cutting it.
And the Horsemen's Edge Senior only has 4% fat. Bump up his feed to 6lbs A DAY. Then see how he does. If he doesn't improve, either switch feeds or add some fat. Oats do not have enough fat to make a difference, just carbs & fiber.
I suggest black oil sunflower seeds or rice bran for fat. Beet pulp is fiber, not a whole lot of fat, & he's getting enough fiber from his forage & that Senior feed.
But bump up his grain to the daily minimum, which should be on the feed bag or tag. |

I agree with everyone else I would switch to a higher fat feed. Also the fact that you said you found out he is anemic I would treat for ulcers. That made a world of difference for my one horse. and if he does have ulcers a low starch feed would be good. like TC Senior, or Legends Performance Pellets.... Good luck he is handsome. |

I agree with this except I have been using other brands. I use safe choice special care that has no corn products at all and is low in starch. The mare that had ulcers, I also fed probios, ulce-r-aid and purina amplify for added fat. I am not a purina fan at all, but that amplify WORKS!! I had a different horse in about 60 days. |

| Lysine!
I just get the SmartPak, it is quite affordable and make a big difference in my horses. Go read the reviews as well, tons of input about how it helped others build their topline.

Location: wolverton,mn | Beet pulp is fiber but it really fills them out nicely and does add weight. I would do beet pulp, great hay, a good feed and long trotting, lots of it. Long trotting strengthens the underline muscles and help lift the back (strengthen) . he will look super if you do these very simple things! He will look and feel great, plus you will really get to know your horses feel and rhythm when you are out long trotting! |

Location: Somewhere between raising hell and Amazing Grace | I don't think you are lacking in the topline of this horse as much as OVERALL. The horse is thin all over, not just his topline. Now I'm not saying he's starved thin by no means. His coat is shiny and he looks healthy so you are definitely doing something right.
Can I ask why you are feeding him Senior feed? Look at what is available in your area and read the labels. High protein isn't always the answer, look for something high in fat and fiber as well. If he is a very hard keeper alfalfa may help. I think there have been a ton of great suggestions on here, like beet pulp.
But I think you are more looking at adding overall weight rather then building topline. If you can get him on a better feed program to get the weight on, you will get what you are looking for. Good luck!!! |
