Location: Arizona | Our coming 3 year old filly has a chronic dry cough. My whole herd got influenza in February of last year after a family member dropped off a couple of minis. They all had a slightly productive cough, and some minor thick nasal discharge. The filly did develop a slight fever and was off feed for a few days. Our vet wasn't concerned and everyone was fine within a week or so.
A few months later she would have a dry cough occasionally but I attributed it to allergies. We started her lightly under saddle in April and she would cough sometimes during her warm-up. She was fine for quite a while up until about 2 months ago. She started coughing when being ridden or running in the turnout. Thought maybe the bermuda was dusty so we started wetting it down before feeding. It didn't help much, stopped feeding it out completely and it helped and she would only cough maybe once during a ride. Now today she was coughing while playing in the turnout. We have also had a cold snap and the temps have gone from high 70's to the low 50's in 24 hours. She is never off feed, no fever, it's not productive. She doesn't wheeze, etc. I'm going to have the vet out after Thanksgiving but just wondered if anyone has had any success with herbal treatments or antihistamines to control a chronic dry cough? Or any ideas as to what may be causing it? I was thinking allergies but now that it's so cold I'm not sure. |

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | Feed probiotics to bring gut flora back to normal. RE-Coup is awesome, helps strengthen lungs when they get abused from coughing at Saratoga vet products. add activated charcoal to the grain ,you can take out of the capsule and mix it available at any grocery store and Biohesper C/K to help bring antioxident levels back up. the charcoal helps carry out poisons/ bad bugs out of the system and completely safe in any amount. |

Location: Arizona | Thanks guys. I will look into everything you suggested. She is doing better now, but still coughs occasionally. Drives me bonkers. Hopefully the vet will have some answers...without costing me a fortune |

| This was my colt to a T. I actually had him scoped and we then ran him on a dose of steriods because he had a deep virus and then we also gave him albuterol. He did this for a about 3 weeks and he got better. Ended up all and all about $200.00 |

| I have a mare with a chronic cough. As in, I will hear her cough standing in her stall, she coughs when warming up, then breathes heavy and coughs after a run. I really noticed it as a 3 year old when I really started riding her. Had her scoped and found minor irritation. At that point, the vet suggested I treat with a powder that contained egg proteins, I think it was called Epic. That did seem to help, but there was still an issue. By October of her 4 year old she was coughing so bad after a run that I decided I better have her scoped again. Still really found nothing, maybe some minor irritation. My vet prescribed Lasix for runs, and Ventipulmin for daily riding. I got along with this pretty well, but when I ran out of Ventipulmin my local vet suggested I try Tri-Hist instead. Got along great with the Tri-Hist daily and Lasix for runs. Then Tri-Hist went on backorder so I had to find something else. I decided I wanted to try something natural and found Super Wind from Gateway Products. It has Honey, Apple Cider Vinegar, Alcohol, Menthol, Eucalyptis Oil, and Lemon Juice. So now I'm using this for daily riding, and I use it along with Lasix for runs. My mare feels the best she's ever felt. The first time I ran her on it she felt so strong and running harder than ever, like she can finally breathe. I also water her hay down and spread it out on a rubber mat to try to reduce the dust.
It wouldn't hurt to have her scoped to see what's going on. We are really dry, and I think my mare's biggest problem is the dust. We've basically been in a drought since not long after she was born. I think her breathing is definately better when we get some rain that knocks all of the dust down. This mare has been my first experience with breathing troubles, and it has definately been an education! There are so many products out there. Someone suggested Air Power by Finish Line. It appears to be very similar to the product that I'm using, and since I already use other products from this company I went ahead and ordered from them. |

It's very dry/dusty here as well. She will cough in her stall once in a while and does cough more after she has had some decent exertion. Like high loping the pattern. We don't feed her hay anymore at all, just soaked pellets and beet pulp. I'm thinking the vet may want to scope her, I'm just hoping it's nothing that is serious or is going to be a constant battle for us to maintain. She is the most talented horse I've ever seen around the barrels/poles and as a long 2 year old she rides like she's 20. Never bats an eye at anything, quiet, respectful and responsive. I will look into super winds, it can't hurt to try something natural and see if that doesn't help enough. We don't run much, probably only 4 times out of the year so I don't think it will hinder her career too much if we can get it under control. |

I hope it's just something like this. That would be a big weight off my shoulders. I keep thinking maybe it's a lingering virus since she did have influenza earlier this year. |

Chicken crumbles
Seriously? Like, egg maker crumbles? Chick starter? Why would that benefit her? I'd like to know because I have a bunch of it lol! |

Like chick starter---contains Aureomycin which is good for respiratory problems. This is what I used
