| Any advise, references...ect would be much appreciated. I'm not looking to make a business out of it. I'm doing this to keep the baby. I'm not horse stupid but I'm dang sure not breeding savy. I'm trying to do as much homework as I can. Any input welcome. |

| A few months before you want to breed your mare, I would have a repro vet examine her to see if she's a good candidate to breed. They can check for cysts, scarring in uterus, infection...etc. |

Ditto! This can save you thousands in wasted shipping semen fee's only to find out there is a problem with your mare you have to address first. Then, you need to really evaluate your mare. What are her strengths, and her weaknesses and what you want to improve. Physically and mentally. |

| I have decided on a stud and all that good stuff. I have the financial part handled. I may look for a book or two that could help. I'm just talking about tricks of the trade.

I don't think there are any tricks to the trade other than making sure your mare is breeding sound and finding someone who knows their stuff to do your repo work.
You might ask the stallion owner how the semen ships also. I had a neighbor receive three different shipments of semen last year and the motility was next to non existent and never did get their mare in foal.

| I will get to looking for a good repo vet. I used to have one but I just recently moved and will be living here in the same area in 2015-2016 I'm sure. Does anyone happen to know of a good repo vet around OKC or Tulsa? I will travel no prob.
I did talk to the stallion owner and they send 4 straws total, 2 for each "breeding"
Do you guys do anything special with your mares or their diets the year before? I will be hauling her all year so she will be in shape and I will be putting her on hormonal herbs come about Feb to regulate heat cycle (Chaste Tree Berry, Raspberry Leaves, Cramp Bark).
I wondered if 2 straws per "breeding" was normal? Since I'm a newbie and this stud has several babies on the ground I didn't really question it.
Thanks again everyone. |

super important! Mine saved my mares life because the baby was coming out wrong. Scariest thing ever. And this wasn't her first baby either. For feed, I kept her on Alfalfa, VitaBran Joint and Triple Crown Complete. The supplement I used was THE FertileMare. If this is your mares first time she may not take so she could use some help. Good luck and enjoy the process! I love my little baby! They grow so quick so don't forget to take lots of pictures. |

2 straws is normal per breeding in most cases. Now if you want to breed to something like Chicks Beduino it's only 1 straw for the price and you need to go the sperm injection route :)
