I have a 6 year old gelding that I purchased cheap because he bucked a girl off. I have owned him for almost 2 years and I absolutely love him. 99.9% of the time he rides so nice I could put a kid on him. He drops his head and will walk, jog, canter like a pleasure horse. But about every 3 months or so, we will have an incident of him wanting to buck. He will be riding along dead quite and doing everything I ask of him. Then you can feel him start to almost have anxiety. His head will come up a bit, his ear will twitch, he will scoot under himself, and then he will try to buck. It seems to come out of nowhere. He’s not cold backed or cinchy, and he’s not a mean horse, so I don’t believe it’s behavioral related. Something has to be setting him off.

I’ve been doing a bit of research and I did find a few articles that reference bucking as a sign of an ulcer. I also searched all the threads from this year so I’ve learned a lot about ulcers, but still couldn’t find anything quite like this mentioned, so I’m curious what others thoughts are on this theory. Or if you have any other suggestions on what it could be if not an ulcer?

Thank you in advance!

I would say pain before I said Ulcer.  Ulcer symptoms don't just come up once in awhile.

Could be the saddle slipping, could be something pinching, could be activity you are doing, ie. going up and down hills on a trail ride causing pain,  or the amount of activity and riding causing pain.   Horse could do something dorky in the turnout lot and throw something out.
I'd have a chiro look at the horse when he gets goofy.

The Chiro was my next step! I've actually tried a few different saddles on him and then had a saddle man confirm it was fitting correctly so I've ruled that out. But chiropratic issues was my first guess until I read about the ulcers. It has always happended in an arena.

I disagree with this statement. My horse last fall had the worst ulcers my vet had ever seen when scoped, his stomach lining was over 90% ulcers and he had them all the way up into his larynx. However, he rode perfectly and ran great except you had to whoop his ass to get him in the gate. That was the only spot he would show any signs of discomfort. I know a couple other horses who would show signs during specific activities as well. I know a lot of the time the discomfort is apparent more often, but it can just flar eup on specific instances. I still agree with you that it probably is mor epain related, but I wouldn't rule ulcers out either.
