| My barrel mare has been the best mare I could ever ask for. I am 15 and started barrel racing when I was 10, and of course I went through all the junk horses and the horses that were too much for me. When I got with a good trainer and he found this mare for me, I fell in love with her and she has taught me SO much. About 3 months ago, she was diagnosed with EPM. We have went through one round of Sulfadiazine-Trimethoprim-Pyrimethamine Combination and are currently going through another. Then she will be on ReBalance for a while. So my question is has anyone else bred a horse after they've had EPM? I would really like to breed her, especially if she doesn't return to normal. :/ Also, does anyone have any EPM stories they'd like to share, and did they return to competition? Thanks yall. Emily

| Lots of stories on here of peoples horses returning and competing at the same level if not better. I didn't catch mine soon enough and left muscle wasting but has returned to the pattern with my 5yr old daughter, walk-trot, and is doing great. Stress can trigger relapses so I'm anxious to see if anyone on here has bred after epm and had success.

Location: Kentucky | My mare was diagnosed with EPM 5 months into her pregnancy. I am not sure how I feel about that diagnoses, but I am treating her now. I have noticed her gaining muscle mass back. That was her only symptom. |

What are you treating her with? |

Sorry for all the questions..... How much longer do you have to treat her? Did the vet say it could effect the baby at all, treatment or epm itself? I wish you luck and hope you can get rid of it! |

I am treating for 30 days, 30ml per day. I just squirt it on her feed and she eats it up. It's just really sticky.
My vet added the folic acid and said it will not effect the baby, but it would if left untreated. I am hoping I can knock it out too. I hear so often that horses are overdiagnosed with EPM, so I'm hoping mine isn't that case. |

Location: Texas | I have a mare in foal who had a positive titer. The only muscle atrophy she had was on her masseter muscle on her face, and it has since returned to normal. She was never ataxic. I would say she was a very mild case. I confirmed over and over with multiple vets about breeding her and they all said she was 100% fine. She is going to go back to competition after she foals as well.
The first time I treated with oroquin and I had to treat again a second time. The muscle atrophy occurred after I gave the oroquin. I believe I treated with Oroquin in August of 2012, then I treated her again with Marquis in Jan? Can't remember.
Every horse is different and you will hear a million different ways to treat EPM. My advice is don't ever rule any treatment out. what doesn't work for one horse may work on another. |

Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | My mare had it bad, very neurologic, no noticable muscle loss--however, she did gain muscle and tone up her topline after treatment. It been a small miracle, but I was able to return her to competition, and she's better than before, as she is more confident, no longer stubs her toes, and her feet aren't hurting her.
However, I don't think I'd take a risk and breed her, primarily because her ovaries are one of her biggest triggers. She was mildly relapsing with every heat cycle until I was able to calm them down. I'd love to have a baby from her, and she's earned the right to have one, but I will probably have her ovaries removed (spay her)instead to eliminate the severe ovary pain that she gets, and thus the trigger to her inflammation.
I do have her full sister, and though she doesn't have the barrel racing resume that Mia does, she has a pretty decent one as an all around, and probably would've had a nice one had I been the trainer that I am now when she was young. She has a little better mind, and will make the better mama, so that makes it sting a little less... |
