Beside Regumate and spaying a mare what else is there to do.. She's been looked at by vets, Mare Magic doesn't work. My mare is a freak I guess. She's in heat in the winter, that's not to common is it??? If this has been discussed before please lead me in the direction of it so I don't bother folks again about this subject..

You can give them a shot to keep them from coming into heat for a few months- can't think of what kind right off the top of my head, I had talked to my vet about it. Some vets will also do cattle implants in a mare, I have never had it done but have known several people who have done it, and their mare's health & fertility were fine afterward. My horse vet will not do cattle implants, so I went back & forth over doing the 3 month shot from my vet or doing the cattle implant with a cattle vet, and finally decided on the 3 month shot, because my mare was only bad in the late spring/early summer.

Thank you.. The shot is it on the lines of Depo shot for humans?? I've heard of the Marble too. Just flusterating because she's really nice, but when she's in heat, might as well walk away from her.. Ughhh... Again Thanks..

Yes, along those lines :)  I talked to my vet about a marble, but they are expensive, you can't tell without going to the vet if she still has it in, the mare can expel it, and even if she doesn't expel it, it might not work! The shot was around $40.  My mare was like that, too. I hoped she would train out of it, like all of my other mares do/have, but she never did so after 6 years I said enough is enough! She is incredibly talented, and the sweetest, kindest horse ever, EXCEPT for when she is in heat in the springtime! ROYAL witch, she will  kick anyone or anything for NO reason with no warning, will NOT go out of a slow jog while riding, is obstinate & ornery, I swear she is just a totally different horse. It was t where if I saw she was in heat, I didn't do anything but brush her that day! I raised this horse and she has had proper training, and after I gave her enough time to grow up, I started researching other avenues.  She is her sweet, happy, compliant self ALL of the time now  :D

Try MAGNESIUM daily for a full 3 months. With out it all animals/ human have issues. May not fix anything but worth a try and inexpensive too. They can be in heat in the winter just not as aggressively as they would in the summer as mother nature tries to protect them. Try looking up a thread on REGUMATE

I marbled my sons horse when he was a little boy and I was afraid she was going to get him in trouble because she was so bad.  It worked for her and was very inexpensive.  Is there a reason you don't want to use Regimate?

Never have used Regumate and right now $$ is a issue.. I hate hate hate to give shots, so that is major issue.. Had a bad reaction to giving a shot one time so now I would rather the vet do it... If it what I have to do tho I will. This is the mare I got from Cyndi before she died, so I will do anything I have to keep this mare..

That's a pretty special mare.  I personally had good luck with marbling my mare and it wasn't expensive at least at my vet anyway.

Yes she is pretty special.. I'm going to talk to vet tomorrow about all options. I so want to make Cyndi proud of us.. I know she looks down on us everyday and probably wets her pants laughing at some of the things Sass does.. Most days I just shake my head and laugh.. I so want to get her heat cycles under control..

You can save $$ on Regumate by going to a compounding pharmacy.

Have you tired any additives to her daily feeding? We had a mare a while back, that had very strong unusual heat cycles. She would also come into heat during the winter months and it would last almost three weeks. She was always very moody and would even try mounting the other mares in the pasture. She was quite odd. Anywho, we tried dozens of ideas to get her cycles to "settle down" nothing was working until I cam across Moody Mare, from Silver Lining Herbs. It supports healthy and natural hormone balance, supports the uterus and reproductive organs, and maintain harmonious heat cycles by supporting the natural progesterone and testosterone levels. It may be worth a shot for you. Its not super cheap, but one bag will last you about 60 days. >>> http://www.silverliningherbs.com/store/products/31_Mare_Moods-6-1.h...

Good luck!

Has she had an ultrasound of her ovaries? (unless a vet has ex-ray vision they can not see what a scan can) My friend bought an 8 yr old mare- spent 6 years in patient training and tons of supplements trying to figure out her Mare heat crap and come to find out she had cysts on her ovaries.

My 2 and 3 year olds are both in season right now.  The 5 year old cycled out in the fall like they're supposed to.  Don't know what's up with that.

Regu-mate is given orally. You'll want to wear gloves and not get it on you skin, unless you don't want to cycle either. :)

Progesterone that you have mixed by a compounding pharmacy is usually injected about every 10 days. And much cheaper.
