My good gelding must have got to playing because he is gimpy when turning on left hind leg. Streight away he is just fine. No swelling, marks, heat anywhere on the leg. Noot walking on the toe so no abcess. I'm debating wether to give a little bute or previcox. I want to get the deep inflamation out but don't want to mask asything. What do you think?

Turn him out for 4-6 months and then leg him up very slowly in straight lines or big pasture oval track ... you have to build the muscles up that hold his stifle in place .... NO BACKING OR HILL CLIMBING ..

Previcox is asier on the stomach than bute.  So it would be my choice.  If you have access to a laser or theraplate that would help also.

Acuscope Acuscope Acuscope!!!

Dealing with this issue currently on one of my barrel horses. Fell out running, he has weak stifles to begin with so have always been working on them.

We did an external blister and he gets about 3-4 acuscope treatments a week. We were giving bute morning and night for a few days to help with the inflammation.

Good luck! I know your pain and this is not a fun rehab.

Bute is NOT bad- and has its place. Or you could use surpass and treat the stifle directly if your concern is gastric issues.

If you have been working that long to get them to strengthen.. IMO, it isn't working.  Why don't you have them split and be done with it?

Thanks all, I am not even sure its the stifle. He seems little better today. I have an appt with the vet Thursday for a diagnosis. He may have just stepped wrong and will be fine in a few days.

How do you know it's the stifle if there's no swelling, heat or anything on the leg? He could have tweaked an ankle, or hock or lots of other things. I took one in that I thought sure was a stifle, and after X rays found out that he had fractured the splint bone in his back leg. I had another that had the same symptoms you're describing, but he was sore in the SI. I think if it was me, I'd take him to a qualified lameness vet and make sure what it was, and see what he suggests. I don't ever give mine pain medication before I find out the issue because I'm always afraid they will hurt it worse if it there's not much pain. Pain is the body's way of telling the horse to take it easy.

Yep your absolutely right! That's why I am taking him to my vet on thursday! So I know what it is I am treating! :) I would think if he tweeked an ankle or hock that there would be swelling and heat in those areas? So we will see!

He fell and got hurt, it happens. If he has stifles issues after his rehab then sure I would consider splitting them.

I has one that "tweaked" his ankle....turned it or something. Was gimpy on it, but no swelling or heat.

Very interesting on the ankle tweek with no swelling !!! Well, thursday we will have answers. I'm sure my vet will block the foot and ankle. If he goes sound then we will know! Shoot he might even be sound by Thursday. Lol fingers crossed.
