Where do you guys look to find your off the track prospects? Also those that run horses off the track have you experienced any more soundness issues than horses that haven't run?

I found one through a BB here, it was actually how we became good friends. The second one I found from a man I bought a horse from, he wanted to give her away as breeding sound. The third I found on racehorse place.com, and the fourth I found from the same BB… the 5th I found from the same BB again through heritage place. darn you Kuhlmann!!

I've bought several OTT's through ads on this site and others.
Once I had made a contact with some of the sellers, I have bought others from some of them.
I have also bought a few off the Heritage Place Sale but as with any sale, that can be risky unless you are able to get them vetted before buying on that sale.  (There are vets at the sale).
Anything I have purchased off of the sale has also had broodmare potential for me in case it ended up being unsound.

I have been looking for over 4 months now and no luck.  Regardless of whether they are in a sale or by an individual, if they have run on the track I vet them unless they are so cheap that I can afford to take the hit if there is something wrong. Of course I have had no luck at all. Either they dont vet or it is so apparent there is an issue.

I bought my off the track horse from a bulldogger. He tried to make Clifford a dogging horse but it wasn't meant to be. I'm not sure how many outs Cliff had but he was a terrible racehorse (couldn't handle the starting gate as he's extremely clausterphobic) so might not have run a lot. So far he has had zero soundness issues and he's showing potential to be a rodeo horse. I wish I had the budget to buy and feed another horse because his breeder has a whole bunch more bred like him that he wouldn't mind selling, and they're only about 35-40 miles from me.

I found mine on Speedhorse but not sure if they are still doing classifieds.   I have since kept in touch with his jockey and trainer so they can locate me more.

Who Wants to Trade?

I'm around a lot that come off the track. Some I'd suggest as barrel horses, and some I flat wouldn't.

I can say, the faster they run, the more likely you are to have a chip or arthritis or something of that nature. That said, even a slow horse can have issues, but not nearly as common.

My issue selling them is that there are gaps in the market. A barrel racer has a hard time spending $7500 for a prospect, but at the track someone will pay it so sometimes people think they are crazy priced but those are the fastest ones to sell.

The hardest ones to sell for me are the cheaper ones that aren't quite cheap enough (3-5k). They are the winners with their ROM who aren't good enough to stay race horses, but just good enough the owners don't want to give them away. Ironically, these are the ones who I think would make the best arena horses LOL!

I may be the weird one but I never vetted any of my OTTs. All I get off the track are fillies so if they are unsound, it's not a total wash. I also have not spent a ton of money on them either, so if they ended up unsound it wasn't a huge investment. I had one end up with an OCD chip in her stifle but there is no way to say the track did that.

For me anything over $3500 I vet.  I will not accept chips, OCD's or tears.  I will always scope one as well.
I buy for long term, not to trade or resale therefore I am very particular. I will not buy anything that is offset, has bad feet or a bad attitude.
See why I have not found anything!! hahahahah
The seller is not out a dime. They actually get a free vet check out of the deal.

I know where there is a really nice paint mare that had a couple outs on the track and is started on the pattern.   She's been handled correctly since she was a yearling.  She ran drug free on the race track and is just an overall really nice made, nice minded filly.  PM me if you'd like to know more.  I also have a filly that I just took in on trade that had a couple outs this year as well as a gelding that we ran in Oklahoma.

They have had some nice ones listed down in Louisiana and Texas on aaracingstables.com
I was considering getting one from there before I found my current filly. Good Streakin Sixes lines.

I purchased one from the Heritage Sale and so far I am very pleased! VERY well bred and good prices!!

I would go back there in a heartbeat! I did not have a vet check done on mine, took the chance. Had about 8 starts and 1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd, the rest unplaced....SI of 98. He can be a goof, and spooky, but he has a GREAT work ethic and talent/speed like crazy!

I found mine on FB, I don't vet either I just buy mares with broodmare potential so not out if they are unsound. I really like mine, very smart, no spook etc.

Yep I buy with intentions to keep around a while and sell down the road. I buy for what I would want myself, especially for broodmares. Now their babies my goal is to move them sooner than later, because knowing me I get more and more attached the longer they are here!
