Veteran Posts: 193 Location: USA	Ok, so I'm joining the Jr.SRA and I'm wanting to get my horse ready to compete we'll have rodeos just about every month so I want her to be on her game. What do I need to practice with her to get her ready with out getting her sour of barrels to soon? Also, whats good training tips for getting a horse to use his hind-end through a turn I already know stopping and backing but is there anything else? Also, how good are junior cowhorse bits? I'm thinking about getting one...

Expert Posts: 2276 Location: ohio-in my own little world with pretty ponies :)	Have you been showing her? If things are good with what your doing now then don't change anything much. If you haven't been running her then I suggest you take her out to some barrel races. To keep her from getting sour I would do as little barrel work at home as you can and just ride her. As far as getting her hyped up....I can't speak for anyone else but the last thing I want is my horse to get "hyped up" my goal is always to keep my horse as calm as possible. Is there a trainer or someone that can help you? And give you advice?

Elite Veteran Posts: 956 Location: Washington	First is the horse already trained on the pattern? If so then I would just keep her tuned with drills. If she isn't then I wouldn't even worry about rodeos till next year (the way you worded it hard to know if the horse is trained or not). As for using the hinded, collection. The horse needs to know how to collect no matter what your doing, if the horse is sprawled everywhere riding and basic circles then they will be when running and turning. So collection, getting the horse to drive with the hindend and keeping the front end free. I don't understand why people want their horses "jacked up" in the alley. It doesn't help the horse run any faster really. The horse is going to get adrenaline going without the help of creating a monster going in. As for JC bits they are nice light bits, but if nothing is broke then don't change the bit.

Veteran Posts: 193 Location: USA	She'll stop and turn on a dime and yes she's trained and tuned into the barrel pattern. But I was looking for another practice bit with just a little bit of gag when I run I use a Million-Dollar Bit (Right now my practice bit is tom-thumb but I think I need a little bit of gag, not a lot but some and I've heard these were exceptionally good bits) but so far I can make a 16.5 with her in a pretty niced sized arena. And you have NO idea how she is. She is literally the LAZIEST horse in the world!!!! She's just 8 but extremely laid back. I've had her a little over a year and I go to horse shows and I do western pleasure and I can jump a course with her about 2'. I also do trail rides with her 2 days a week the other 2 is light barrel work and exercises. And she's not thin or under weight to make her lazy she's perfectly fine she's built like a tank as it is and is probably the size of a horse and a half - two horses in width front and back but she's not over weight either she's just muscled, I just want her where she's alert and ready to go. I'll try and get some pics up of her later...
